> The receivers, who were impressive on the first day of camp July 31, continued to display an increase in talent, and depth, from last season.

“They want to make plays, they’re going to be aggressive, they want to be great so that’s just gonna make us better,” Dixon-Williams said. “I’m glad we got those guys on offense and the guys on defense, we’re gonna make each other better and we’re gonna have a great year.”

Dixon-Williams mentioned graduate transfers James Burns from Austin Peay and Brett Buckman from Delaware as difficult players to go up against. He said Burns blew right past him with his speed in one-on-ones and was then giving pointers on how he should be defended.

“Now you see a little bit of health sprinkled in with some other guys and you see the explosiveness that they can give you,” McClendon said. <-

-> Players weren’t always tackled to the ground, but the guys in the trenches and skill players were definitely taking active reps against each other at full speed. Head coach Jim Mora told his staff they had over 200 “gradable” snaps to evaluate, according to assistant defensive line coach Kenny McClendon.

“It felt good to finally put a little pad on somebody,” defensive end Eric Watts said. “It’s nice to actually be able to play football again.”

The quarterback competition continues in Storrs, as it appears Mora was true to his word that three players are in serious contention for the starting duties. Joseph Fagnano, Zion Turner, and Ta’Quan Roberson all got reps with first and second units and all made plays that demonstrated what they uniquely bring to the table. Roberson probably has the inside track for the job but Fagnano and Turner are both capable. <-

-> Cale Millen, who switched positions from QB to safety in the spring, took some snaps with reserve units at QB. This may be because Brayden Zermeno left the team, or because he has some “wildcat” style plays in the playbook for certain situations this season. <-

Getting giddy about this offense. Any news on how Joly has improved or the lower tier WRs?

* From the NEFJ report above:

“At receiver, expect to see a lot of new names making contributions. Brett Buckman has impressed his counterparts on defense with his route running and strength and James Burns has showed off great speed, according to safety Malik-Dixon Williams. Freshmen Kylish Hicks and Zack Drawdy also made big plays.”

All great, but I really want to start hearing about Cam Ross. If he is the #1 he was before Covid and the injuries, we’ll be fine at WR.
I'm kind of ok not hearing about Cam until the Friday morning paper and what a great game he had. It seems whenever we hear his name, it's followed by the description of his injury.

Thanks - didn’t see this article.

Haven’t heard much about him either. Just give him one healthy season but that felt like 5 years ago.

Is Malcolm Bell not on the two deep because he's been or is hurt, or because he's been beaten out. Is Chris Shearin, who played the vast majority of every game the second half of the year as the nickel back, not listed because he's been beaten out or they're keeping him as the nickel and just aren't listing him as a pure corner?
