We're not competing with U. Texas though.

We're up against teams in smaller states, states with 2 teams.

UConn does not have a demographics problem.

Some of the mentality may be linked to the small size of the state. Reminds me of elections when people look at maps of the US and they see the massive bloc of Wyoming as indicative of a candidate's popularity.
That's my point... we're in a bag with Rhode Island and Mass and don't really merit any thought beyond that. And these are misperceptions that people are quite comfortable with.. they're not really interested in being illuminated.

This is pure hindsight. At the time the decision was made, it was the correct decision. You have to look at it through that lense and not what happened afterwards.
Yeah - it was the correct decision for Coach Edsall to fund his retirement.

Every other coach and player wanted to play football. And yet our coach was sipping pina coladas on a beach in Florida talking about how it was too dangerous to be there.

It was a cost savings decision to not play FB was my opinion.
Exactly. Which is part of the (very fair) reason that people have the perception of us that they do. It was the “easy” thing to do at the time - to not ever even consider revisiting the decision or work in conjunction with other leagues that were trying to play says a lot about our administrations commitment to football.

It wasn't the right decision they packed it in and left themselves no ability to pivot like so many other teams did. Everyone else played while UConn sat at home, it was a waste of two football seasons for a school who was trying to gain admittance to the P5. It was an awful decision which still has ramifications.

look, UConn is an outcast, the dumpy kid, so on. football is going to have to punch them in the face before there's any respect
Especially Baylor folks. The athletic director and podcasters keep saying that UConn football is nothing and UConn doesn’t bring anything to the table. UConn football is 2-0 against Baylor.

 and there it is! A random strawman excuse! Everyone else learned enough to play football starting in September but we were still evaluating the situation at hand. Makes sense!
No, everyone else decided money was more important

I stated my reasons for agreeing with them on why they cancelled BUT this is disingenuous. They did NOT "learn" significantly more between September and November about the virus. We were in a conference and we value BB more, which is reasonable for schools like us, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, UNC, etc.
The timeline wasnt really September to November. That makes it sound like it was only an 8 week difference.

It was more like early August to mid November, which is closer to 16 weeks. And in that timeframe we were able to see what was happening in other sports. The other sports being played and going off relatively smoothly is a huge piece of data we could not have known about football

Did UConn also do that by beginning practice for basketball in the middle of October, or are you still rationalizing it by some made up idea that it was “safe” for hoops at that point and not football?
By October we already saw how other sports were going. Basketball is also a much smaller roster and the team was basically quarantined from everyone else

We cancelled our season on August 5th.

UMass announced on August 11th they wouldn’t play football, then reversed their decision on September 21st, playing a four game season

On August 17th, the SEC announced a 10 game schedule beginning September 26.

On September 16th, the Big Ten announced an 8 game season starting October 24th

On September 24th, the PAC12 announced a 6 game football season beginning November 7th

New Mexico State played a 2 game SPRING schedule (!!!) against FCS teams because they didn’t play in the fall

We had every opportunity to play football if we wanted to. Literally everyone else did and people even reversed decisions in order to play. To stand by the idea that we were “right” for not playing, despite everyone else playing and college football happening during every other war and pandemic in our history, isn't just stupid- it’s straight asinine

I love guys like you who take up the time to look up dates in these internet arguments. I don't have the patience or will for it, but admire your willingness to do so for the cause.

He dug his heels in and has chosen to die on this hill no matter what. Of course he knows it was the wrong decision as everyone else in the country played and the players were just fine. I guess it makes him feel better to say it was all about greed from all the dumbf^^k regions in the country.

Since those schools are already in, it is no point bashing them. We will need their support if we want to join in the future.
So you want to pander to areas of the country that already (and multiple conferences) that rejected us multiple times, and will do again and again, and that's our path forward? This is amazing.

It's ridiculous to cancel the season and then go back and say wait, nevermind.

Using hindsight to say that everyone was fine is a terrible argument. You make decisions based on the information you have at the time. You can't judge them in any other way. Good decisions lead to bad results all the time. It's part of life.

Look. You either want to play football or you don’t.

Our players, coaches and school didn’t want to play. Other places bent over backwards to find a way to play.

It was a terrible signal.

How on earth is it ridiculous to cancel the season and then change course and play?
That's what a bunch of teams across the country did and it worked out well.

We had the information, we knew a tremendous amount about the virus by then and who was having the serious health outcomes.

The hubris to say we were right and everyone else is wrong is just staggering. We all saw how it played out, UConn was wrong.

Meh. You can't compare our Independent, Fan unsupported Football program to any other environment. We are unique. Generally we shoudve played maybe . Through the UConn lens at the time, I would lean to not playing as the right decision. But that has NO bearing on CR and if anyone tries to argue different they are liars with their own agenda's

Of course it has bearing, it further showed how unserious UConn is about football.

Point being, "they" never took us seriously so what does it matter. Dont fall for this crap. This is the umpteenth time we have been passed over for a CR invite and none of the preceding had ANYTHING to do with skipping a D1 season of Football. And now covid is a problem? LOL you have joined the clueless spinmeisters.

We have a football problem and an image problem. Canceling the season when everyone else played plays into both our problems.
It played into NOTHING. "UConn fans. Making excuses for trying to play football for 25 years" That should be our university tagline.

In this thread I learn that Superjohn thinks we didnt get a Big12 invite because we shut down a major revenue loss season for covid.

I'm kind of with August on this one... It seems that every time we hear a "reason" for not getting the call, it's a reason that only applies to us. I'm pretty sure that the unspoken reasons we don't get any invites are because a) we're arrogant Connecticut people; and b) we'd end up dominating.

All UConn needs to do..IS WIN.

The perception problem re football is real...and Huskies see the team differently than do "outsiders".

Here is the deal...beat P5 teams that have a winning season (example..UConn is 17-6 against the ACC and all six wins came against sub .500 teams).

That builds football respect.

Beating sub .500 teams is nice for a "W" is a "W", but beating teams viewed as pretty good boosts perception.

Just win, baby, win.

We need football to bring money to the school to support other athletic programs.

Athletics are like the front door to your school, and it is free marketing.

UConn needs to have a good to great football program. It is as simple as that.
