Why is this the worse? These are not season ending.

Yes it make this weekend very difficult but thankfully it's now and not March.

Mosqueda-Lewis, Tuck sidelined for UConn
UConn will be without Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Morgan Tuck for the next few weeks but the news, especially regarding Mosqueda-Lewis, is not as bad as originally feared.

Mosqueda-Lewis, UConn’s leading scorer in the last two seasons, suffered a nerve contusion in her elbow but no major structural damage during her hard fall early in the second half of Monday’s win over Stanford. Tests revealed no broken bones and no dislocation of either her elbow or wrist. She is out indefinitely but will be re-evaluated next week.

Tuck underwent surgery to remove loose
cartilage in her right knee on Tuesday and she is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks.

UConn will head on this weekend’s road trip against Maryland and Penn State with just seven healthy scholarship players and that includes Brianna Banks, who is still working her way back into the rotation after recovering from a torn ACL suffered during her sophomore season.

Tuck would have been the logical choice to replace Mosqueda-Lewis in the starting lineup but with her out, the likely choices would be juniors Banks or Kiah Stokes.

Hate to say it, but this is about as positive an update as you can expect from KML. She avoided any bone issues and didn't suffer from any torn ligaments from a dislocation.

She should be able to avoid surgery and recover through rest and rehab. Timetable for this injury is usually 4-6 weeks. Being conservative, she should be back on the court by early to mid-January. For a small % of patients with this injury, if the above doesn't work, surgery is required. Not likely though.

Ugh. Thoughts and prayers with both of them.

Ulnar nerve contusion is a bruising injury to the ulnar nerve, close to the skin’s surface at the elbow, from a direct blow. Contusions cause bleeding from ruptured capillaries that allow blood to infiltrate the nerve. Direct injury to the nerve causes damage even if bleeding of capillaries is not a factor. The contusion causes pain, hand weakness, and loss of feeling, often in the fourth and fifth fingers. Ulnar nerve dysfunction or inflammation may greatly decrease athletic performance in sports that require strong hand or wrist action.

No room for foul trouble like in the Stanford game with only 3 frontcourt players available. Well, unfortunately, as Nietzsche said, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Sigh.

Well, now at least we know. The only silver lining is that Banks, Chong and Stokes will earn huge extended minutes in games. This could be a blessing in disguise come April...

Take care ladies and rest/rehab as best you can. Know that Husky nation is thinking about you!

While this isn't good news, at least for the short term, there are some good things that could come out of it:

1. This will force Stewart to have to play like an All-American every night. If she becomes consistently great, and KML gets healthy, UConn becomes unbeatable.
2. This will also force Stokes to step up her game, and Moriah Jefferson to play a more prominent role on the offensive end, which could pay dividends later on.
3. Tuck's injury opens up the door for more playing time for Banks, which could help her get up to speed more quickly.
4. Chong will get some really good experience right off the bat.

If KML and Tuck get healthy on schedule, they should return with plenty of time before the postseason, and they'll be coming back to a better supporting cast.

But imagine defeating the number 7 and number 15 teams on the road despite these setbacks!
That would be sooooooo sweet.

And on a more important note -- best wishes to KML and MT for complete, speedy, happy recoveries. It's times like these that drive home just how much we come to care about these kids on personal levels.

Yeah, it's what I was hoping for with Kaleena. When the injury occurred, the first thing that popped into my head was "funny bone". Glad I was right.

Guess we now know why Morgan's been wearing the brace...

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, ladies!

I had a contusion of the ulnar nerve a few years age from the athletic activity of driving 1700 miles with my left elbow resting on the window sill. Result was loss of feeling in fingers four and five, which got me an appointment with a neurologist. The good, it healed over time by itself - the bad, it was over a year before feeling in those fingers completely returned. Here is hoping KML does much better.
