Maybe @CocoHusky knows this answer but wouldn’t the committee listing these names modify the list based on improved play or reduced play the way the Wooden award does?

To me, omitting Clark is egregious and they could remove Taylor, Mangahtia and Van Lith in the least due to their drop off in play...

And YES, Didi Richards is Baylor’s point guard and is doing an admirable job, just not better than Paige or Clark....

Guessing Clark who was not on the top 10 list found her way to the top 5.

BTW UCONN WBB Mt. Rushmore is missing a PG -just sayin.
Ah, but don’t tell that to the 2003 or 2004 voters who gave the Lieberman Award to UConn Mt. Rushmore fixture and legendary PG(?) Diana Taurasi!!! ;)

Seems like lots of politics involved with this list of finalist. Iowa fans complaining that Clark gets no love, so she is added despite the fact she averages over 5 TO a game. Sorry PG need to be solid decision makers and she just is there yet. Great Shooter, not Great PG yet. McDonald who is playing the exact same position as last some how wins the Drysdale last year, but now magically is a PG since there is no chance she will win Drysdale again (Evans is a lock there). Mangakahia is a solid PG, but she has been way to inconsistent this year. She has forced so much this year and averages 4.7 TO a game. Didi and Paige are the only two legit candidates in this list based on overall performance. I think Owasu and Burton both of the Big ten are far better candidates than the other 3.

More of a shooting guard I think.
Actually Caitlin like Paige is a PG but she does not require any encouragement to score while still averaging 7.1 assists per game, 2nd in the nation. Paige is 8th in Nat. at 6.5 assists per game. Although Paige is more efficient with an A/T ratio of 2.65 (20 in Nat.) versus Caitlin's 1.4 (185 in Nat.).

An afterthought: is Paige actually UCONN's PG or does Nika now play the PG position. If anyone says "Well Nika brings the ball up but Paige is the PG," then perhaps Iowa has a similar situation with Caitlin. Didn't Geno say Nika at the PG frees Paige to better get into the flow of offense as the shooting/off guard? And the answer is: today's game is positionless which explains why these lists are confusing for some of us. It does allow the selectors to put players on any list they please. Or they just are being nice by placing Caitlin on the shooting guard list because she would get buried by Paige at the PG and she deserves an opportunity to win one of these awards?

The folks that make up the list and get to nominate players are WBCA coaches they pay attention.
Yeah, I'm sure they dedicate a significant amount of time to be diligent selectors. Geeze think of all the time they must spend watching film on all these players.

There has been a lot of misinformation within the last couple of post regarding how the WBCA positions work.
Here are the facts: WBCA sponsors (5) position awards 1) Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award 2) Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award 3) Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award 4) Katrina McClain Power Forward Award and 5) Lisa Leslie Center Award.
At the beginning of the season a watch list of 20 players is created by nominations from the coaches. A player CANNOT appear on more than 1 watch list at a time. Through the season the list is narrowed down first 10 then to 5 ? before a winner for each award is selected. Very unlikely that a player plays their way on to the list but it does happen. The key to nominations are the coaches advocating for their players-not fan, not the press, not some AD-Just Coaches. An example of good advocacy is Kim Mulkey this season. When Kim realized that Didi Richards was going to be her starting PG she petitioned for Didi to be added to the Liberman watch list and Kim was successful. Now You know and I know that Didi is not a PG but that not the point. The point is to win one of these awards you need your coach to first nominate you and then advocate by getting some other coaches to vote for you. Yes you read that correctly-Not only do coaches nominate the COACHES ALSO VOTE on these awards.

"Each award namesake will head her own selection committee. Each selection committee will be composed of fellow Hall of Famers, WBCA member coaches, and media members." Why do do you say only coaches? What other source do you have? These non-coaches cannot nominate players? Where is this limitation cited? Thanks!

Now if Paige could only get all of her followers to vote for her, she would win it hands down.

Yup., Paige Bueckers selected as one of 10 candidates for the 2021 Nancy Lieberman Award Geez. I think she is the favorite.
Some Nancy Lieberman Award facts:
  • No freshman has ever won the Nancy Lieberman Award, not Bird nor Ionescu
  • UCONN is the only program that has produced more than one Lieberman Award recipient:
    • Sue Bird - 3 times
    • Diana Taurasi - 2 times
    • Rene Montgomery
    • Moriah Jefferson - 2 times
  • Only two other colleges have more than one Lieberman Award:
    • Oregon: Sabrina Ionescu - 3 times
    • Notre Dame: Skylar Diggins - 2 times

Technically, Paige hasn’t really played PG all year. Evina was playing PG before Nika started, and now Paige is really more the 3. But we play largely positionless basketball around the perimeter, so she starts off the ball as a wing, gets it coming off screens, and then acts like a PG once she has it. But her role means she’s less ball-dominant than a typical PG. If she had higher usage, she might be closer to 9 apg (and maybe 3 or 3.5 tos).

Nominations is different than selections. Nominations are done by the schools and coaches because only the schools know which positions the players will actually be playing. Please refer to my earlier example concerning how Did Richards was Nominated for the Award by Kim Mulkey and Baylor "after the decision was made that she was going to be the starting PG.

Dude! Where does the WBCA lay out the award's process? Not a lot of transparency at the WBCA. Google does not know. Is the information you are providing "Homeric" or just deduced from a few situations such as the DiDi article? Give me source to read. Thanks!

Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced the five finalists for the 2021 Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award.
  • Aari McDonald (Arizona)
  • Didi Richards (Baylor)
  • Paige Bueckers (Connecticut)
  • Caitlin Clark (Iowa)
  • Tiana Mangakahia (Syracuse)
Fans can vote on their favorite beginning Friday, March 5 on hoophallawards.com.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 student-athletes in November, which was narrowed to 10 candidates in February and now just five finalists. The winner will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame’s selection committee.

I would not be surprised if Tiana Mangakahia wins the Lieberman. Very public Breast Cancer Survivor and leading the NCAA with 7.5 APG. Yes, her other stats are not the greatest. In fact, they are mediocre. But she is a Breast Cancer Survivor (with a Double Mastectomy) who returned to lead the NCAA with 7.5 APG.

don’t forget she is 5th in the nation in turnovers. everyone wants to ignore that. yes she is a fantastic freshman, but not the best PG in the country.

That would be shown in "Although Paige is more efficient with an A/T ratio of 2.65 (20 in Nat.) versus Caitlin's 1.4 (185 in Nat.)." A/T ratio = assists to turnover ratio

The Lieberman was the only position specific award for a long time, and it created a little issue with nominees as to what guards to include in consideration. The idea of the five individual position awards is I think a good one and was supposed to create less controversy. In reality, we now get controversy over all five awards and who gets consideration in each category. Oh well!
