Are you referring to this? This fellow, eden ahbez , who was essentially homeless, pretty much followed Nat around until he finally listened to his songs. I think Nat went through hundreds of this guys songs before he settled on this. Rock and roll or not, it's one succinct, beautiful, well crafted lyric.

This is my favorite version, the one grew up with. I also really like the version from the movie Moulin Rouge, a more dramatic interpretation.
And yes it is "Nature Boy" not "There was a boy"
