will take place in Bangkok July 20-28. The Group Draw took place this morning and Team USA will be in a group with Australia, Hungary and Korea. Team USA (Crystal and Megan) lost to a very talented Russia team in the gold medal game in 2017. Russia did not qualify for the 2019 worlds.

The makeup of the 2019 team will come from the U17 world champions (Bueckers, Fudd, etc) and the U18 team (Christyn and Liv) that won the Americup and maybe a kid or two who didn't make those teams.

Should be quite the competition to make the team. Will Walz be the coach?

So is there any U17 and U18 competitions this year? This FIBA stuff always confuses me. Does it switch between U17 and U18 and then U16 and U19 every year?

The U16 and the U18 teams compete every 2 years in the Fiba Americas tournaments. Those events serve as qualifiers for the U17 and U19 World Championships (Cup).

In 2019, a USA U16 team will compete in the Fibas Americas tournament to qualify for the 2020 U17 World Championships. Again, the U19 team will compete in 2019 at the World Championships.

So, the U16 (Americas) and the U19 (Worlds) teams play in the same year every other year and the U17 (Worlds) and the U18 (Americas) play in the same year every other year.

I should also point out that the Pan American games will be played in Peru this year though I'm not sure of the dates. This was the tournament Stewie and Moriah played in and lost to Kia Nurse and host Canada in 2015. This might be an opportunity for Crystal or Meghan.

Funny you mention this:
Was just putting my team guesses together today.
G: Azzi Fudd, Paige Bueckers, Hailey Van Lith, Christyn Williams, Anaya Peoples
F: Haley Jones, Jordan Horston, Rhyne Howard, NaLyssa Smith, Samantha Brunelle
P: Aliyah Boston, ONO.
Brunelle is going to be pushed to the brink (pun intended) for a spot by Maori Davenport, Cameron Brink or Fran Belibi.
ONO is going to be push hard for a post spot by Sharika Austin , River Baldwin or Sedona Prince
Anaya Peoples & Haliey Van Lith are the most vulnerable guards and will be pushed to the wall by Aubrey Griffin and Aijha Blackwell. Should be fun!

I’m always excited for U16. It’s a new game for everyone. Of course a few 2022s and 2021s attended the previous U17 trials, but none made the final 18 I don’t believe (Azzi doesn’t count!). I hope 2022 6’7” Lauren Betts is there. Could be the next big thing.

I think Queen Egbo and Rickea Jackson are legit contenders too. Brunelle’s time might have passed.

USA's Group has been called the Death Group. It has some of the most talented teams and it won't be an easy walk for Team USA.

No other team can match the USA. I think we might see 30 point plus wins every game.

Obviously both of these things can't be true. Please clarify.

No France which is surprising. Belgium did qualify and is beginning to develop some fine talent. The Belgians were an absolute delight to watch at the World Cup in Tenerife back in September.
Julie Vanloooooooo for threeeeee!

This is a different event, but a nice shot from Julie:

Hmmm. If I hadn't planned a trip to London, Bangkok would be appealing.

IDK. That German squad looks formidable. If I reading correctly (based on your prior post) that German squad would have the top two 2000-01 players in Europe in Bessoir & Fiebich and a bunch of other players
like Sabally & Geiselsoder that can flat out play.
Where would you project Bessoir would be ranked if she were American & class of 2020?
BTW I never consider it a cake walk when US HS and college kids are going up against a team that includes professionals.

Bessoir would be outside of the top 10 in the post in 2020 if she were American. Probably outside of top 20. Internationally top 5.

Thanks. Don't think we are that far apart. I tend to fall in love easily and this might have been the case with Bessoir. I don't have her projected as a post player more of a 3/4 hybrid and would be ranked between Marshall (#12 in ESPN) and Daniels (#13 in ESPN). I also believe that she would be better than two other forwards of comparable size (Brink and Reese) because she does just about every thing better-handles, deep shooter, defends.....

YoungBuckets ranks Fiebich first, Geiselsoder, third and Sabally seventh in the 2000s Euro rankings. Same service ranks Bessoir first in 2001 ahead of Iliana Rupert and Jelena Mitrovic (Oregon State). For comparison, Makurat is second in 2000 and Muhl is seventh in 2001.

Can those 4 Germans all between 6’3 and 6’4” play at the same time? Sounds like their front court may be able to hang with the US, but maybe not back court.

Looks like the Aussies will have a nice backcourt, but will their front court be able to hang with the US?

Side note - is Iliana Rupert a pro? or is she considering the college in the US?
