If you watched the WUG against Italy, was that really basketball? Guess I am really spoiled by Uconn woman's play. Jordan Canada doesn't know the word "pass". Diamond Deshields looked lost (maybe because Holly was there) and every other player (except maybe McCall) were unimpressive. Do they actually coach these players?

Sloppy game. Russell was good on defense and showed some good stuff on offense. Powers and McCall were impressive. Team USA had 25+ turnovers with Jenkins and Canada sharing the bulk. If you watched WUG against Italy you would've heard the announcers mention Diamond has been wearing a boot, something that she has been doing since sitting out a good amount of the training camp for an ankle injury. She got very few minutes to ease her back into gameplay. Diamond is going to be rusty. More than half the team hasn't played international ball before and it is going to be an adjustment for these players with no experience regarding getting used to how physical you are allowed to play. First game of the tourney and the vultures are out.

Italy is not likely to be one of the better teams - they have been together less than the US has - basically arrived in Korea for some warm up games as the first time they were together as a team. McCall and Powers were pretty impressive - what was not was how much the US seemed to be out hustled and out muscled for most of the game.

Hopefully USA will tighten things up as the games continue - if not, they might not medal.

Not an impressive start for Team USA, but a win is a win. The way the announcers were going on about Holly, you would have thought that she was the Head Coach of the team. This game was played by individual players and not a team. Too much one on one play by Team USA, especially by the guards. Will be interesting to see if we'll see team basketball by the end of the games.

Maybe Holly was head coach - sounds about right - no team play - just jack it up but everybody crash the boards

She's not the head coach.
Knew that - should have shown "tongue in cheek" but did say "maybe" in responding to post that said announcers were talking as though she was head coach. Peace:)

Ouch! 33 TOs to 13 assists - a 0.39 A/TO ratio. Italy had no center and the USA survived with a 51-23 rebounding edge that included 23 offensive boards. Interesting that the team assembled does not have any good 3 point shooters - something that is generally pretty important in international play. Could be an issue in a late game situation down the line.

I guess the USA coaches, and the forum fans, dont get to see the west coast teams very much.
She only played 2.48 yesterday but the best three point shooter and IMO, the best pg on the team is Sydney Wiese.
If Canada plays over 30 minutes and Wiese plays under 3 there is something wrong.

Wiese's 2 year stats at Oregon State

True about lack of west coast intel - thanks for that update on Wiese - had assumed she was a wing when I saw her enter the game. The commentator did mention the coaching commenting on lack of distance shooters, and I think mentioned Weise in practice being in a shooting slump.
I was surprised with Canada who consistently was getting lost going under screens and leaving her player wide open at the arc - even when everyone else seemed to tighten the defense. Italy was a particular defensive challenge as they seemed to play a five out offense for most of the game.

Rebecca Greenwell made the team, but had to withdraw due to illness. She's a real good three point shooter.

Rebecca was a great 3 point shooter in HS and prior to her injuries. Not so now, shoots 35%. She is the best that Duke has at 3 point shooting. She's not the player she was prior to her injuries.

Her % percentages will likely increase with the addition of talented guards and shooters/scorers She was pretty much the only 3-pt option for Duke last year.

35 is a high percentage at some colleges.

I couldn't agree more about Wiese. I got the P12 channel last season and enjoyed watching her and OSU play. It looked to me that the USA strategy was to have the penetrate into the paint and either shoot or dish to a post. Pretty basic stuff and kind of boring to watch as most of the layup attempts were missed and it was only the whistles that let Canada put up any points . Weise is very good moving without the ball, coming off screens for 3's. She is also a great passer, something Canada needs to add to her game. The best passes I saw were from McCall a couple of times in the paint to Russell for unopposed layups. Frankly it looked alot like the SEC strategy of having a guard throw up a shot and then letting the posts crash the offensive boards.

Against Italy the USA played best with two point guards and Mercedes Russell on the bench.

1st Q USA 20 Italy 21
2nd Q USA 29 Italy 19
3rd Q USA 13 Italy 14
4th Q USA 18 Italy 14

With Mercedes Russell in the game Italy Wins the 1st quarter. Russell sits out the 2nd quarter with two fouls, the USA plays two point guards and wins the quarter by ten points. Russell returns in the 3rd quarter, the USA goes back to one point guard and loses the quarter.

I think that Canada was a shoot or turn over machine. The main problem was turnovers.

Easy solution.... just send Russell home.
