I went through a similar process with my inkjet, minus the golf club troubleshooting technique. I ordered a nice color laser Samsung 4in1.

Now, I have problems with toner cartridges. I mostly print B&W, only using color for special occasions. Now, half the time I want to print, the printer says I'm out of toner (color cartridges only), and I can't print anything as a result, even though I'm ostensibly only using the Black toner cartridge. The color cartridges must dry out or something. Same result for copying. printers.

yep. toner catridges are like . If you don't use it, it'll dry out on you.

I was going to say something similar, but actually knowing there is a 10 year old in this world without an iPhone is refreshing and gives me hope.
I resisted getting my daughter one forever because for preteen girls the social aspect is fraught with pitfalls, but when she was literally the ONLY kid in her 5th grade class without one I had to relent. Kids are vicious if you have one and more vicious if you don't.

However I think since Fishy is such an esteemed yarder that in boneyard tradition he should get his daughter TWO smartphones and start her on a. 50.1 mile running regimen .
In fact running would be preferred to JetBlue.

Fishy's parenting technique gives you hope? Cut down just a little on the green my friend.

I have had the same Canon all in one wireless/wired MX PIXMA for like 5+ years. Never had an issue with it. I buy generic ink on Amazon $10 for two complete sets of 6 cartridges. (the packs would be $60 from Canon. or OfficeDepot) Works great, never had an issue in all that time with my wife and I have been faxing, printing and copying loads of documents.

The best is the cartridges that have date codes embedded into the chip. So if it is a lightly used printer the cartridges can be full of ink but will not print because the ink is past date.
.

There's really no such thing as a decent inkjet printer nowadays. They aren't designed to be functional, they're designed to break and make you buy as much expensive ink as possible. Multi-function inkjets won't even let you fax or scan if any of the four ink cartridges are empty, whether or not ink is even necessary for the job.

I've heard about this mythical "good" brand of printers. Let us know if you ever discover one.

Count printers firmly in the category of electronic devices one should NEVER purchase or accept refurbished. Disaster.
HP LaserJet III - best printer ever. Thing was/is a tank. They were released in 1990. We still have a few dozen going in the office. If you only need B&W and can still find one, it's worth buying.

I have five of those in my office and the only thing that ever goes on them is the roller that picks up the paper from the tray - a quick repair.

They are positively bombproof otherwise.

It's beyond soaking in warm water. It's not a functional piece of equipment in its present state as the not-remotely-helpful status screen is now just a scrambled mess of random signals. The putter knocked the Phone button in and that seems to have caused brain damage.

It was actually the paper tray - it refused to acknowledge that it had paper in it.
When it can't feed paper, it needs to have the rollers cleaned, preferably with alcohol.

The worst thing on this planet is not genocide or the plague or global warming - it's inkjet printers.

I cannot remember one time when an inkjet printer actually worked when I absolutely needed it to work. Want to print a 4x6 of your kid doing something pointless? Inkjet printer will handle that, no problem. Need to print out a boarding pass? Whoops...ink's clogged and the paper tray is broken.

I hate them. Hate, hate, hate. I hate the companies that make them and I hate the people who will tell me how great their inkjet printers are because they're liars.

In any event, I just hit ours with a golf club which made me feel better for two seconds, but seems to have made things much worse.

More than anything, you just have to hate the stupid A$$H0LE$ that buy them....

As far as your daughter not having an iPhone, good for you. My little one (7) has an ipad and an iPod touch but still no phone. Our older kids have iPhones. We fly Jetblue regularly and tried using phones for just the four of us. When we got to the airport we discovered that neither of our older kids even had email set up on their phones nor did they want to (storage). So despite the emails being in their accounts with bar codes we couldn't access them because they didn't even know their gmail passwords. I was shocked and asked how that could be and they basically said, "nobody uses email. It's so annoying." Texting, twitter and Instagram etc. are all they need because our school system allows them to upload/download assignments via its own platform. So, while the printer is becoming obsolete, so is email apparently.

Meh, my kids waited until 13-14 to get phones, and probably still don't use them enough to justify the expense. I could see getting basic phones for younger kids, but they all want smart phones.

People still use printers? How cute.

Let me guess. You still write out checks and mail them with a stamp too, right?

Page me when the time comes when a person on the computer doesn't make an error. :)

I just wrote a check for a parking ticket the other day. Sent it in via post, and got it back a week later. Forgot to fill out the written dollar amount. Out of practice.
