Wow, surprised that so many people are thrilled by athletes transferring out of UConn and calling it a win-win. Very comical.
That's only because Ines and Amari are in unique situations.
Ines was a last minute add due to a cavalcade of injuries. She was not a typical caliber UConn recruit, but was a lot better than taking a walk on. She showed her value when she had to play full games against Princeton and Maryland.
Even though she turned out to be quite competent, she was still playing behind Paige, Azzi, Kk, Ash and now Allie and Morgan. No matter how much she improved there was always going to be USA top #15 guards in front of her.
Transferring, especially to a solid program (with a giant hole at guard) like Gonzaga will let her play 20-30 min a game. This is better for everybody.
Geno and the staff are great communicators. They would have talked Ines through her options from Day 1, and most importantly still offer an open door to Ines. Once a Husky always a Husky.
Briefly on Amari. She similarly just wasn't going to play mainly due to struggles with 1 on 1 defense. If she can get past nagging injuries and Maryland can use her in a zone or rim protector role, she can also earn a lot more playing time.
Kids want to play. If they make a sincere effort at UConn and it does not work out - a transfer out is not always a loss.
