For the Big Ten, I'm not surprised Michigan State declined a bid considering their injuries this season, but I'm a bit surprised Northwestern would decline. Maybe they had their heart set on the NCAA's? My two cents -- Veronica Burton should be dancing. :(

Duke is not. It seems that the WNIT is beneath the Blue Devs.
Another good reason to dislike Kara Lawson.
Northwestern had their NIT experience a few years ago when they faced Arizona in the championship game. They probably felt, been there, done that, and not again. Burton was on that team

I checked Duke's twitter page. Apparently they are visiting with puppies for the time being.

I was thinking the same thing. Once you have reached the championship game, there is a "been there - done that". The WNIT is great for 3 kinds of teams (I think):
  • the lower level teams that get an opportunity to compete in a post-season tourney they otherwise wouldn't possibly get ever.
  • teams that are rebuilding and need the experience
  • teams that want the exposure, which, to be fair, isn't all that much I think, unless you reach the final, when you are on national TV, at least

Boston College is my favorite to win it all. Gakdeng will dominate and BC’s seniors will go the distance. They’ll probably have to do it on the road because they usually play the games at teams that draw the best. Arizona, Indiana and UTEP past examples of teams that drew very well and were able to host including championship games. Teams that win the championship usually springboard into the NCAA tourney the next year

Would love to have seen Burton in a tournament environment one more time.

There’s not a single game in the NCAA’s or WNIT in the state of Colorado. :(

The closest I can get a game is going to Laramie, Wyoming to watch mighty Wyoming take on Idaho State. I’m not sure…..that’s high on my list of priorities this week. glares at CU Boulder, Denver, CSU, and UNC. See what you’ve done to me?!?!

Ah, Laramie ... that just happens to be where I was two years ago, right around this date, as the pandemic mass bummer blanketed the entire country. I knew we were all screwed when the shops of downtown Laramie were shutting down

On another note, I am noticing a "TBD" in the bracket for Akron's first-round opponent. My cursory research indicates that West Virginia may be the team that was supposed to be there. I wonder if Carey changed his mind about accepting the invite?

As much as it pains OSU WBB Fans that OSU will not be participating in the NCAA Tournament, I am happy this young team has the opportunity for post season play experience. Maybe OSU can have a University of Arizona transformation into the 22-23 season!

The next obvious question: Which players are transferring?

I guess I never realized that the WNIT expanded to 64 teams from the 32 teams 11 years ago^. So that's 134 teams that make postseason tournaments of 348. That is 38% of the teams. Wow. Now all the leagues want to be like the NHL of the 80's when 16 of 21 teams made the playoffs!

^In my defense, I root for 2 teams (UConn/Rhody) so for 33 years not having to worry about the other postseason tournaments until this year when Rhody is finally in one!
