Imagine if the USA team had played their best game. A much different result than the exhibition match. Too much dribbling when bringing the ball up and too many bad passes, but you can't argue with the final score. Lou does have a quick release, but she will need to get stronger so she doesn't get pushed out of the post. Kaleena found out that when she posts up nobody is going to muscle her out of her spot. Lou will have the height advantage over most, if not all, of the players guarding her. With added strength, her and Bre will make a tough duo. Looking forward to the next game.

Really nice game for Ionescu too:

9 pts (4-5), 6 boards, 4 steals, 2 assists in just 13 minutes.

Next to Katie, Ionescu is the best player on that team, especially considering that she is only going to be a Junior. For a player so young, she is the total package, both offensively and defensively. Of course, I am basing that only on these two games, which is way too little for my opinion to have any validity. Just for fun, though, check out the plus/minus stats.

Yeah, I think Ionescu's a UConn type player. Does pretty much everything well, very cerebral, can shoot, can pass. Showed a great ability to improvise in the AAU games I saw her in.

When the great Maya Moore left, Kaleena was the one recruit who could best soften the loss. When Kaleena leaves, Katie Lou comes in to fill the void. Nice system that Geno has developed!

KLS played the most minutes as well.... The coach is not stupid.

From what I understand KLS is not yet 100%. She still doesnt have all batteries fully charged. I believe Monday is an off day for TEAM USA. KLS will appreciate the off day.

First half observations:

Durr and Samuelson are the best players on the team. Durr plays solid athletic defense, when I think a lot of kids their age sort of avoid playing defense on every single play. She doesn't take a play off. Samuelson can do it all. Dribble, pass, shoot, play defense - she's not as athletic as Durr, but also obviously takes pride in playing it and works hard.

Cox had some nice moments. She's a year younger and not at the same level as Samuelson, but she's a year younger. Bigger, stronger, and pretty mobile for a kid her size. Like her game a lot.

Anna Wilson (Stanford) is a solid guard as is Ogunbowale (WI). Neither did anything spectacular but both were solid when out there. I was a tad more impressed with Wilson out of the pair. Chou (TX) has potential and is a solid player, but didn't do much. Ionescu is the same age as Chou and I was more impressed with her, but she didn't get much PT for some reason. She reminds me of Sue Bird...

Mulkey doesn't really intrigue me, but Holmes (TX), and to a lesser extend, Burke do. Holmes is bigger and stronger, but Burke (looked about 6'1" to Holmes' 6'2 or 6'3") played well, is athletic, and knows where to position herself for rebounds. Both players missed layups, but Holmes especially looked good putting the ball on the floor and driving to the basket.

Boykin got a lot of PT and seemed to be "relied" on, but didn't do much in the way of stats. Was actually more impressed with Holmes and Burke than Boykin.

Second half observations:

Boykin had a much better 2nd half. some steals, layups, logged a lot of minutes but did more visible things with her time on the court in the 2nd half. Side note - when on the bench, Durr either sat next to Boykin or Samuelson almost the entire time. Just a random observation FWIW...

REALLY liked Ionescu's (CA)game - she came in about the last 7-8 minutes and impacted the game from everywhere. More athletic than Bird at the same age, not as good a shooter, but she was everywhere getting steals, deflections, pestering the French guards, and scoring as well. Reminded me a bit of Faris on defense. Thinner of course, but same type of athleticism and intensity. Oh, and she's got ball handling and scoring skills Kelly didn't possess at the same age. Sign this kid NOW! :) She, Cox and Holmes were the next 3 most impressive kids on the team for different reasons...

Cox also impressed as well. Kid is a bit raw, but you can see the potential. Seems much more a forward than a wing at this time. Needs to work on ball handling and outside shooting, but again, a lot of potential. Oh, and all of the US post players managed to make layups in the 2nd half. Their allergy to the basket seemed to disappear LOL...

Even Mulkey played better in the 2nd half. Of the kids who may not be on our rader, IMHO Joyner Holmes should be.

Given that Chou and Cox seem likely to go to school in their own states, I think a full court press on Ionescu is called for. Would love to land that kid. And if UCONN isn't already recruiting Holmes, they should be.

UConn is pursuing Tori McCoy who's in the same class as Holmes and Cox. McCoy, evidently, had a slight concussion during tryouts or probably would have made the U17 team. As good as Cox and Holmes are, and they are very good, I like McCoy more from the games that I've seen.

Well that makes sense. From everything I've read and heard, getting Cox out of Texas may be near impossible (same goes for Chou). But I could see McCoy and Holmes similar to Dolson and Stokes - when UCONN put them both on the court together, it was near impossible for the other team to score on the inside.

thanks for the great write up Eric! I saw only part of the game today so this is very helpful and informative!

That was last year that McCoy suffered a concussion and missed out on the U-16 team. This year she just plain got cut though most reports said she played quite well.

You're correct. I misread the following report that McCoy missed out on this year's team because of a concussion.
She missed last year's game and didn't make the cut this year.

If there was one player who’s walking papers we were somewhat surprised by it would be Tori McCoy (2016 – Champaign, Ill.). The 6-4 forward made the team last year but was unable to compete due to ongoing complications from a concussion sustained during the trials. McCoy was a force from the start this year and made herself a factor virtually on every play offensively and defensively. She displayed a level of effort not often seen from bigs that was magnified even more by her exceptional athleticism. Her skill set is evolving but, by her own admission, the 15 footer needs to become a factor to make her a more complete threat.
