Dan Hurley and the Huskies went from an empty class to a three-man group in just over two weeks in July and August. It started with Rahsool Diggins (No. 54), a tough combo guard from the Philadelphia area whom opponents struggle to keep out of the lane. After Diggins came Jordan Hawkins (No. 59), an upside wing who can really shoot it from the perimeter. Capping off the stretch was center Samson Johnson (No. 61), who might not be an advanced offensive prospect just yet but will make an immediate impact on the defensive end and is improving at the other end of the floor. The Big East was bound to help UConn on the recruiting trail, and the 2021 group has already provided some proof.

Three of the top five freshmen in the Big East next year. Talent flooding in.

Naturally Kentucky’s three lackluster (by their standards) commits all received big bumps. I’d take Sool over Nolan Hickman in a heartbeat.

Of course, happy to see our guys bouncing up the rankings, too!

Some Yarders are adamant that is not true. :)
247 Composite rankings of our last AAC Class - 31, 66, 107
247 Composite rankings for the 2021 BE Class - 54, 56, 71

What an incredible Big East boost. Hurley surely never would have been able to get players in the 50-70 range if we were still in the AAC.

You want to tell me which year you're talking about?

2019 (recruited to the Big East anyways): 66, 92, 105, 161
2018: 178 (B. Adams - Ollie's class was 90, 178, 209)
2017: 168, 178 (UR Whaley and Kwintin, MAL was 41)

Big East classes:

2021: 54, 56, 71
2020: 50, 81, 175

I was never a complete AAC hater or Big East apologist, but I think it's pretty easy to admit from a basketball standpoint that we're better off in every facet being in this conference.

Hurley has said himself he was able to get recruits that first year due to the UConn name and being part of revitalizing a program. Now he says that he can use the Big East name. I agree his first true class was awesome in the AAC but there’s a worry that the Hurley honeymoon phase might’ve fallen off if we remained in AAC.

I'm talking about the 2019 class, who were not recruited to the Big East, they all committed months before the Big East announcement.

The thing about that worry is that it's just not based upon anything factual. Hurley brought in that great class when we were basically at our low point as a program in the last 40 years, but somehow people think if he turned the program around and put guys in the NBA his recruiting would get worse? It makes 0 sense.

If Hurley sucked as a coach and we continued to be bad as a program, then sure, our recruiting would get worse. But that has nothing to do with the conference.

Hawkins is being underrated everywhere IMO. He is the one of the guys I would bet next week's paycheck will get big time minutes next year.

Great defender. Elite shooter. Solid athlete. At 6'6 his weak handle and passing vision isn't such a limitation since he can play the 3. And with this new SnC coach, there's no doubt we'll get him playing at a good weight for the 3.

Sool is a great floor general with size at the 1 but is going to need to adjust to the speed of the game. Plays way too slow and floorbound rn. He isn't going to get by anyone or defend very well at first. Since he probably isnt going to the nba early, I think he'll have the most long term impact.

I think Samson can be a + defender early on. But similar to Akok will have big big issues offensively. If he has worked on that 3 pt shooting it could make the difference getting PT. I wouldn't expect him to be such a natural shotblocker as akok though.

Where we are recruiting right now is a good place. Even under Calhoun, we never loaded up on 5 star All Americans every year, but we still got one or two here and there and they were able to push us over the edge. Thats what made a lot of our teams so great because they had a good mix of talent and experience. If Hurley can develop players, recruit at the level he is now, then maybe throw in a couple McD All American every few years, then we are going to be in good shape. I know that's maybe a lot to ask, but Hurley has already proven that he can recruit and develop talent at a higher level compared to the last guy.

Calhoun 5-stars per Rivals (goes back to 2002):
2002: Anderson
2003: Villanueva
2004: Gay
2005: Bynum
2006: Robinson, Kelly
2008: Kemba, Majok
2009: Oriakhi
2011: Drummond, Daniels

Its not Kentucky but I don't think his recruitment of top talent should be written off.

It’s weird that Nova is ranked four spots ahead in overall ranking when their three current recruits average out to a #75 rated player and UConn’s three average out to a #58 ranked player.
I am going strictly from information in post with no research, so maybe they have a higher rated recruit that wasn’t on the list of other Big East players so my theory could be complete trash as well.

How they add it up is dumb.

We could have 12 3* recruits and have a top 5 class in the country

I noticed the ESPN 2023 rankings have been updated also. Or maybe this is the debut. TJ Power from Shrewsbury, MA is #22. A couple months ago I was surprised to hear that UConn offered him. And I'm also surprised to see him anywhere near this high. I've seen him play 4 or 5 times but I guess that shows how little I know.

Anyone know anything about Taylor Bowen from St. Georges' School in Newport, RI?
He's a 6'8" Small Forward and listed at #17.

Prescience from ESPN? One of DePaul’s 2021 studs Keon Edwards announced today he’s enrolling early, which pushes DePaul to #26 in 247’s 2021 team rankings

Indeed. That's a major plus for Depaul to have him in the program early.
