Geno has been at uconn 39 seasons. Does this mean that the round of 64 didn't always exist? What was it before 30 years ago?

It was 48 teams through 1993, going to 64 teams in 1994

As noted in the OP the 'round of 64' 1st round has only been around since the women's tournament expanded from 48 to 64 in 1994, thus "30 years" and '30-0' (the reason its not 31 years/31-0 is the suspended COVID year of 2020).

Auriemma's teams have, however, lost twice in the prior 'round of 32' 1st round (1989, 1993), as well as their 1st game in the 1990 tournament when they received a 1st round bye to the 2nd round.

Until the women’s tourney goes to neutral sites for all rounds, there will be few true upsets (11 seed or lower) in round one. There were seven in the men’s tourney this year, one (Middle Tennessee) in the women’s.

There remains an attendance problem in the women’s game, hence the on-campus home court advantages.
