Ultimately I think 1979 is the beginning of the modern era.

  • The 40 team tournament was the first of a multi-step process and that more or less ended in 1985, but started to include more at-large teams. In 1975 you started getting more than one team per conference, so that is a step there, but...
  • Bird-Magic takes the tournament to new heights
  • Founding of the Big East permanently reshapes Northeast Coast basketball and makes it nationally competitive with other regions.

That's a good mile post but I think it has to be the 3 point line and field of 64. That's the modern era of basketball 85/86/87

The tournament and game was drastically different before then. Very few significant changes since 87.
