Recruiting wise or X’s and O’s? Now will we see Dukes recruiting go down?
Recruiting wise. Duke's a machine and will probably still recruit just fine.

Solid hire. He was on the short list for the Georgia job as well.

Wasn't he leading Oklahoma when the whole Tiny Gallon payment situation went down? Will be very curious to see how this situation plays out but he's going to have to pull of a miracle to recruit to that school on the up and up based on their current situation.

Great when he had Blake Griffin...but outside of that...13-18 then 14-18 in his last two seasons...two of the worst back to back losing seasons in OU history. I'd say more 'meh' than decent. Remains to be seen.

Didnt do so hot when coach K was out last year either. I guess well see how good he is in a couple of years once they finally get some experienced players (under Capel.)

Dare I say Ollieesque, without a national title to hang your hat on.

Considering Bowen was like the #12 player and got 100k, and duke just got 1, 2 and 3 next year, something tells me their recruiting will be fine.

awful hire. don't get the hype behind Capel at all. He was mediocre at VCU (where everyone seems to win at a high level) and was trash at OU without Blake Griffin.

Career record w/ Blake Griffin: 53-18 (.746 win%) -- 2 years and 2 NCAA appearances

Career record w/out Blake Griffin: 122-92 (.570 win%) -- 7 years and 1 NCAA appearance

Super recruiters never seem to do too well once they get the big boy job. Capel had some success but Pitt will still be a middle of the pack also ran.

I agree with your overall opinion but there is a lot of programs that dream of .570 WPCT and 1 NCAA appearance
To me, it's really a WTF hire - he's a been there done that - kids don't go to Duke because Capel persuaded them - Puke recruits itself
If I were Pitt, I would go with one of the young up and comings and team him/her up with a vet asst coach

Sounds like KO with and without Shabazz:

w/ Shabazz: 52-18 (.742 win%) -- 2 years and 1 National Championship
w/o Shabazz: 75-61 (.551 win%) -- 4 years and 1 NCAA appearance

I’m not too sold. It’s tough to say how good of a recruiter you are when you’re recruiting for Duke. Maybe he’s learned a lot from Coach K, but it’s hard to quantify. Big leap of faith by Pitt, but their options were limited.

I mean a lot of those wins were at VCU. At Oklahoma he was 16-15, 14-18 and 13-18 without Blake Griffin.

That could be said about a lot of programs who have/had a Shabazz like player - BTW, there aren't many Shabazz types out there - UConn got lucky with two 0 Bazz and Kemba (Praise the Lord!!!)

They struck out on all the young up-and-comers they went after, so this is just a hire to steady the ship for a year or two until they can try again for a hot young coach.

Given their situation, it was probably the best they could have done. It is better than reaching down into the MAC and hoping for success in the ACC. I am sure they overpayed and Capel knows he is safe for many years as he is inheriting an absolutely empty cupboard. If he is even sniffing .500 in the conference in 3-4 years it will be a great accomplishment.

When he was at VCU they were in the Colonial League and he did win 2 championships and had them in the tourney twice in 4 years WPCT= .658 I would consider that above mediocre but still agree it's not a really good hire for Pitt
