Their first Championship was in '82, and they have 21 of them, so I think they trump UConn. Also they won 9 straight at one point, and 16 of 19. None since 2012 though, long slump for them.
Not coincidentally, the run of fake classes and guaranteed As ended around the same time. ;)

"P5" is a college level American football (as opposed to futbol) designation only.
There's always one.

P5 is short-hand for the richest schools with the most resources and is highly correlated with sports success. As evidenced by the fact that having two non-P5 schools is a rare event.

When is the last time the M & W titles in a sport were both owned by non P5 schools?

Marshall & Santa Clara
Of the 14 sports with both M&W here are the only examples I could find from last 20 years:

2020 Soccer: Marshall & Santa Clara
2018 Lacrosse: Yale & James Madison
2020 Cross Country: Northern Ariz & BYU

2018 Hockey: Clarkson & MN-Duluth
2017 Hockey: Clarkson & MN-Duluth
2014 Hockey: Clarkson & Union

technically not P5 ....
2016 Bkball: Villanova & UConn
2014 Bkball: UConn & UConn
2004 Bkball: UConn & UConn

I was unaware that the SEC, ACC, PAC12, and Big XXII sponsored hockey. Not a great example.

The Big East IS a power basketball conference and they were an AQ football conference prior to realignment.

Deliniating programs into P-5 and G-5 for sports other than football is lazy and disingenuous.

Yeah separating out the schools that win 85% of the NCAA championships every year is a silly exercise on my part.

It is, but that's not what I said.

Whatever. Knock yourself out.

One of the top sportswriters in the country. Nice to see he's lazy and disingenuous too.

I'm not sure referencing Pat Forde makes the point you are looking to make, particularly on a UConn message board.

In the women's tennis tournament... one of the little guys from the WCC lost in the finals to Texas 4-3...... it went down to the wire... 7-5 in the 3rd and deciding set. Just like their conference mate Santa Clara.. they took down #1 seed and previously undefeated UNC in the semis.

On a related note.... UNC is in the women's lacrosse final 4... were in both the soccer and tennis final 4.... and won in field hockey. This pains me.

My daughter played in the very competitive California club soccer circuit at the highest level and went on to play in the ACC. I’m not at all surprised with Santa Clara winning. Team was loaded with many Cali players who previously played with high caliber clubs such as MVLA, Slammers, SoCal Blue, Mustangs or San Diego Surf. Those in the know understand what I am talking about.

One thing that would surprise some people is that Florida State ended their season undefeated, including all games in the tournament, but did not win the national championship. That’s because soccer games that go to penalty kicks are scored as ties, regardless of what happens with the penalty kicks.
