Scroll down a bit and there is a very lengthy article from Sunday's Boston Globe
about a trip to the island prison in 1956 by the college champs San Francisco led by Russell and Jones.
Apparently visitors were never allowed to mingle with the inmates....the hardest of the hard in the country...
except for this team. How the prisoners reacted to the players is fascinating.

Kinda interesting that neither Bill or KC offered any insights to the author for the article.

My brother played San Quentin with his band one time. He said the release you had to sign before you went in was scarier than the prison itself. They played behind a 12 foot tall metal fence topped with barbed wire, so they felt pretty safe. But, the Hells Angels had been putting on a bike show earlier in the day, and they hung around on the stage to watch. When the band got going some of their girlfriends got up and started dancing, and that sent the audience over the top. They stormed the fence and order was restored with a water cannon...I don't believe the band ever went back...

The article is about Alcatraz, though Alcatraz isn't all that far apart from San Quentin. Alcatraz used to be a federal prison on an island in San Francisco Bay. It's now a park/tourist destination. San Quentin was and still is a state prison on the mainland in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. San Quentin contains death row for California's 700-plus condemned males, but it is mostly a reception center for recently convicted non-capital prisoners. Areas of both prisons have million dollar views of the Bay, though not so much if you are in a cell.
