So been a couple of games, but time to check in on our PG again:
With a possible two games remaining in her sophomore season Moriah's stats YTD:
Rebounds - 129 - she has blown through the target of 100 with ease and has upped her production of late - now at 3.4/game. Had a monster game on the boards last night in one of only 2 (?) games this year where Uconn lost the boards battle - much needed help for the posts.
Steals - 99 - needs one more to join a very exclusive club at Uconn populated by Sales (3 times) Williams (Rita, twice) and Rizzotti (once)
Assists - 184 - with only two possible games left it will take some kind of special FF for Moriah to reach the even more exclusive club of 200 assists in a year populated by Sue, Jen, and DT who each accomplished it once. (Have to say her teammates are really letting her down here - if they could only make the shots she sets them up for and finish through the little touch fouls they get, she would be there already! I mean she is showing them them the way by hitting almost 60% of hers - is it too much to ask that they do a little better than 50%?:cool::eek:)
Points - 386 - with her current shooting streak she should reach 400 this year - she has raised her average to 10.2 in the last couple of weeks.
Blocks - 8 - it is finally time for us to admit that while the effort is there, the 50 block mark is now out of reach. I still think she has been robbed by the official scorer a few times and that seemed to break her momentum. But she has two more years so ...

On A/TO she is at 2.88 a great number and at the top of Uconn guards - not sure what the team record actually is, but she is well clear of the obvious competition for best ratio in a single year. She will lead the team in assists and in fewest turnovers of any player getting at least 1000 minutes. (4 starters minus KML)

On shooting percentages - .588, .440, and .768 - The first two percentages lead the team and she will likely finish the year with the highest shooting percent and highest 3 point percentage on the team - competition - Kiah at .587 and Kaleena at .420. Those numbers are just great, but ... Since Feb 1 a stretch of 16 games she is shooting: 65-102 - .637, 21-32 .656 from three, and 19-24 .792 on FTs. (Like I said - she is showing the team how it is done, they just aren't following her lead! And in the tournament 19-28 .679 and 6-8 .750 and 3-3 1.000

Whatever happens at the FF next weekend we have all witnessed one of the greatest statistical years of any guard that has played at Uconn over all the glorious years. And not in the statistics is the fact that she has run this team with great command as the PG and provided lockdown defensive pressure on the opposing guards. I tend to agree with Gary Blair that while the other four starters are AAs she may well be the team's MVP.

Moriah is a LOW volume shooter. Given her percentages, I'd like to see her shoot a little more.

I have seen variations of the following a number of times over the last few months regarding Moriah's A/TO margin:
Jefferson has been UConn's breakout player. Her 99 steals and 184 assists lead the team. Her assists-to-turnover ratio (2.9) ranks 12th in Division I and is on pace to eclipse numbers posted by some of UConn's most accomplished point guards in their sophomore seasons. Jefferson averages 10.2 points and leads the team with a 58.2 field goal percentage.
This one is from John Altavilla in todays Hartford paper. While accurate it diminishes Moriah's stellar A/TO ratio by limiting it to just other Sophomore seasons. This may be because Uconn's media guide does not have this statistic catalogued so it is a big task to determine what the Uconn record is and what would you use as the minimum number of assist to qualify? The thing about Moriah's incredible A/TO ratio is none of the obvious suspects in the championship era come close to that number as Seniors or Juniors let alone as Sophomores or Freshman. The nearest is Sue Bird who maxed out as a Senior with a ratio of 2.48. Here are the numbers (and I threw in Maya and Kelly who both functioned almost as point forwards and consistently were well above 100 assist)
Jen - 0.90, 1.67, 1.87*, 1.93
Rita -
0.41, 1.04, 1.57
Sue -
1.56, 2.0*, 1.92, 2.48*
DT - 1.51, 2.43*, 1.43*, 2.05*
Maria -
1.63, 2.06*, 2.0*, 1.69*
Rene - 1.52, 1.72, 1.96, 1.99*
Bria - 1.10, 1.43, 1.58*, 2.13^
Moriah -
1.41*, 2.88^
Point forwards:
Maya - 1.45, 2.08, 2.00, 1.78
Kelly - 1.86*, 1.65, 2.12, 2.11*

Red numbers are for non-starter/non-significant playing time years and Sue's half season.
* = NC year
^ = current incomplete year.

Just as last year's NC was Stewie's coming out party, I'm hoping this year's championship is Moriah's.

Although she will not hit the 50 mark, she has contributed to an NCAA record blocks by a team, the final total has yet to be determined. ;)

I think it may be more of this: Remember this kid? The one who was a pre-season AA? The one who banged both elbows and suffered mono?
The one who was as good in 6 tourney games last year as anyone? The one with the legendary shot, the best shooter in the country? The one who followed the great Maya Moore by wearing #23? Well, she's at the top of her game and the top of THE game.

That said, MoJett will impress the audience. People will ask: She's only a sophomore? She's damn good. Where does Geno find these kids? She's the fastest and most exciting player I've ever seen.

What's her 3-pt pct? Gotta be mid-40s by now. I feel like she's had 2/3 or 2/2 3-pt shooting games for a couple of months. Wouldn't be surprised if she's our best 3-pt shooter at this point.

Umm ... are we reading challenged? :)

And just to emphasize her shooting percentage - The record holder for a 'wing player' is Shea Ralph who shot .624 in 1999-2000. I am not sure where guards fall in this universe as the media guide lists just the top ten and Shea (#8) is the only non-post player on the list. BUT of those listed above the highest yearly percentage was achieved by Maya Moore at .543. Moriah at .588 currently will finish the year better than that.
Here are the best one year percentages:
Jen - .506
Rita - .408
Sue - .505
DT - .494
Maria - .426
Rene - .448
Bria - .479^
Moriah - .588^
Point forwards:
Maya - .543
Kelly - .530
Bria and Moriah's numbers are for this YTD.
Obviously at 10.2 she is not in the conversation for highest scoring seasons, but between shooting percentage and A/TO ratio she is far away the most efficient of the iconic PGs in program history on a single year basis.

I was really surprised at Sue's career best shooting percentage listed above - after all she has the single season and career 3 point shooting percentage leader. The year she shot 49.7% from three, she only shot 50.7 from two for an overall percentage of 50.2 (raw numbers 68-134 from two, 72-145 from three.)
The year she shot 50.5 overall, she slacked of on her threes to 46.6%.
I don't think I remember any player who was so consistent regardless of distance on her shooting - usually there is 10% or more between the two - for Sue that year she split her shooting between threes and twos and hit the exact same 50% whether from 21 feet or three feet.
