Great article Nan. Seems most of the time it worked out in our favor.

Cleveland Melvin probably should be on this list since he committed to us before DePaul as well. Both him and Harkless actually turned out to be very good, but Melvin probably was the bigger loss since he lasted more than a year.

Cool article... But it seems to highlight the "good" misses. No mention of Croshere, who wanted to come but we took Kirk instead or Dan Langhi who commited very early before reneging (mutually?) to go onto Vandy to become a 1500 point scorer or Shumpert from Syracuse who I think we backed off to take Beau Archibald.

Maybe the biggest miss in terms of being fortunate for the Huskies was the Fox kid who went to Arizona (IIRC) and we had to settle for Emeka. At least equal to missing on Jennings and settling for Kemba.

Wasn't that Ike Diogu that we missed on resulting in Emeka?

Was trying to remember that name. I think they were options 1a and 1b. Emeka was 3c.

Diogu and Emeka were a year apart. Diogu 2002 class and Emeka 2001 class. It was Jamal Sampson UConn missed on (he went to Cal) and they then ended up with Emeka.

Thanks for the correction - the mind fades 12+ years in the past. So is this correct? Sampson was plan 1a and Fox 1b and Emeka was somewhere down the line on the wish list?

I remember Billy Curley was a player that coach Calhoun wanted badly and he ended up at BC. During his career at BC he never beat UConn. Would have been a good Husky.

I think Sampson and Fox committed in the fall and UConn didn't start recruiting Emeka until the spring. So he wasn't even on their wish list in the fall and winter. They saw him at an AAU event, I believe in Pittsburgh, and JC loved him. The rest, as they say, is history.

Perhaps the most overlooked miss is Travis Best. We wanted Best and Rick Brunson to be our backcourt but had to settle for KO and Brian Fair.

Emeka wanted Stanford but they gave their last schollie to one of the Collins boys.

Here's my take on "missed recruits"......f'em......you blew it if you wanted to be the best you can be. Don't really care where you land or how hard;)

Would have fit UConn like a glove. UConn's first couple of Final Fours would have been years sooner.
