Castle some new highlights

The kid is good. Really, really good.
Amazing sense of pace on offense. Passing is fantastic for a 6’5 or 6’6 player. He really is a PG more than a combo.
Great use of jumpstop--Hurley loves to teach that.
Has improved SO MUCH since a year ago. Faster improvement than anyone I’ve watched extensively that we recruited.
Defense is going to be the big question… like many recruits, it isn’t up to snuff in HS, so I’m not concerned yet... but being able to defend at a high level will earn this kid big minutes as a freshman.
He is more “ready” than most every one of our recruits so far IMO.
Atlanta basketball is a hell of a lot of fun.

One question. From the first game highlights, Castle wasn’t on the floor at the end when his team was trying to lock up the win. Is he a bad FT shooter? Did he foul out? You would think they would want their PG on the floor to close out the game.

Most likely fouled out. He's a fine FT shooter. There's like 2 teams in the country that could afford to sit a top-30 recruit in crunch time. Newton ain't one of them, even if they are really good. Maybe the best public school team in the country.

I feel like this is a monster, monster get, like Sanogo. Not expected at all! Those kind of gets vs. the big boys or out of left field are sometimes needed to push to a new level. I remember JC would swoop in when kids' dream schools backed out (UCLA - Marcus Williams, etc.) or they made a mistake (WVU taking Hinds delivered Boat).

We obviously need to improve our guard play badly. It's crazy for those of us that have been fans since the 90s, UConn is pretty loaded inside and pretty (fill in your own adjective here) at the guard position. (Cole is very, very good but for a program with two point guards on many of the great teams, wow we are nowhere close to that.)

quick question can he help break the press? If not the main ball handler at least a strong second option. As was mentioned in this post the great UConn teams always had 2 point guards playing. Think cole is being asked to do too much and will wear out by end of year

Yes. 100%. He's nearly a primary ballhandler imo. Far better than anyone other than Cole on our roster getting any playing time. Seriously could be a 6'6 PG with a little development

Castle vs Prolific Prep 1/1

Low how low his dribble seems to be at his height.
Finishing is way better than last year. Better change of pace, hesitations, and body control. Doesn’t have a left still though.
Defense needs work like most recruits

Pretty damn good showing as a junior against a top-10 type program (Prolific is a prep school with a roster loaded with top tier D1 recruits). Looking like Stephon could find his way into being a top-30 recruit and with his ball skills, shooting stroke, hops, and demeanor/focus the sky is the limit for him.

Without shoes with a ruler, he's probably 6'4. But if we're gonna measure it like that, RJ is 5'9, Gaffney is barely 6' and Sanogo is about 6'6. Colleges milk their measurements. For purposes of comparison with other recruits and D1 players--he's 6'5 maybe 6'6.

Game 1 vs Pinson Valley

Left hand is not stellar
Athleticism is average
Really nice looking shot. Smooth.
Scored his team's first 15 points in game 1. Yeesh. It looked like he was playing vs toddlers in this game. Just too smooth and efficient for his opponent… ended up sitting a lot in a blow out.
Moves the ball really well and quickly. That will be a WELCOME addition to this team. Great sense for the timing and rhythm of the game, even when he makes mistakes it doesn’t look out of sync.

Team went down 17-4 to start the game. Good fight to see them come back.
I think he’s a more natural PG than anyone on our team except Diggins right now. Really looks to pass first. So under control for his size handling the rock.
I think he has a lot of potential as a passer out of double teams. He has the height and seems to take good angles to find the open man. Always aware of his teammates' locations.
Super hard to get a read on kid’s defense at the HS level. But when his effort went up, he looked pretty good. It will be an adjustment like it is for them all… but I have faith he could be solid or better on that end in a year or two.
Not in love with his ability to turn hips and slide on defense at this stage. Looks like he’s still growing into his body. Not like some 5* players that physically mature really early and plateau IM
Jakai Newton is the electric star of the team…reminds me of Purvis in hs. but Castle is steady and a leader.
