I'm making a trip to CT tomorrow from NC on short notice. Have not made the drive in a while. What is the best route to Hartford from the Tappan Zee, err, Cuomo bridge these days? Probably be at the bridge around 7PM tomorrow

287 to the Hutch/Merritt to 91N. depending on NYC traffic, the GW bridge could be quicker

It really depends. I drove from Greenwich to Hartford last Friday afternoon and at the time, 287 to 684 to 84 was the best bet and it circumvents Fairfield County traffic.

If traffic is equal, that route is maybe a few minutes longer, but IMO more relaxing than the Merritt, which I do not like driving on at night time, especially in the rain.

Also, 95 is closed around Westport, so the Merritt could be a mess today.

In summary, I’d recommend:

287 > 684 > 84

Big construction project on I-95 in Westport this weekend. I'd suggest circumventing (friday) NYC traffic altogether by taking 287 to 684 to 84. Or if you are coming from the west, get to 84 in PA and follow it to Hartford

FWIW, I always go Cuomo brdge when I'm driving home from the south. Especially on a Friday rush hour.

Cuomo Bridge to 684 to 84 right into Hartford. Factor in the crummy weather and it's a no brainer to avoid 95.

Try to avoid 95 in Norwalk. They're doing construction and it'll be a disaster.

I forgot, they plan on closing I-95 in Norwalk this weekend. Avoid at all costs. Mass Pike would be a better option than 95 this weekend.

684 to 84 is better but has still been pretty miserable when you get to the connector and then through Danbury and Newtown

If traffic reports say there is a short wait inbound on the GW Bridge. Take that, stay in the right lane, take 9A North (Henry Hudson Parkway) to Saw Mill Parkway North to I- 684 North to I-84 to Hartford.

The key is the wait time at GWB. If it's longer than 15-20 minutes take the TPZ to the Saw Mill North and follow the above instructions.

AVOID I-95 AT ALL TIMES.

If you are going that way, getting off before the GW and taking the Palisades Pkwy to the TPZ is always an option. A decent Friday night route, though peak leaf season could affect that,

The correct answer varies. Have faith in GPS apps like Waze or Google maps. They are pretty good at navigating you around traffic. Since I grew up in Philly, I visit there a lot. I find the route varies depending on various traffic delays.

Thanks all. Ended up doing 684/84. Pretty uneventful. The only traffic on the trip was at exit 9e to get on 84 from 684 and some more around Waterbury. Driving back to NC on Saturday

I don't like WAZE, it doesn't give much information it just says stalled car, turn left, turn right. Google gives you the information on the exit signs, the routes numbers, the number of minutes a back up is likely to last.

I will say that Waze is usually right though I often desire more information for some of its odder choices especially when I'm in unfamiliar territory. Like knowing the traditional route has an hour worth of backups or something.
