Will be real interesting to see where he takes it on year 2. Kid is good, real good. But the small improvements he requires are huge in his minutes on the court. And we need him to consistently give us at least 22-24 on foul trouble games and even closer to 28 without.

Can’t wait!

His stamina / minutes are the ?
Plus the quality of his backup’s minutes . Last year was a pretty unique experience. Hopefully someone can surprise us.
Plus you’re always concerned with fouling. Big guys can’t get away with stuff that goes on elsewhere. I think little ref’s enjoy the power to control a guy a ft taller than them .
Two quick ones and his sitting. 10-12 minutes on the first half .

Sports Illustrated has been reduced to a 5th grader's three paragraph book report.
Clingan will be a double double machine with 3-4 blocks a game in his sleep. The only thing that could prevent him from scoring 16-18+ points a game with 10-12+ rebounds a game is foul trouble. If he can average 26-28 minutes a game averaging 20/12 with 3-4 blocks and 3 assists a game is doable.

Every UConn fan is wishing this to be true and the rest of college basketball fears if it is true.

I think 16-17 points, 11 rebounds and 2-3 blocks is where he levels out for the season. He's going to dominate most games with his presence and his box score lines will be impressive. He'll have a couple of duds due to foul trouble bringing down the mean average.

I could see Hurley picking his spots where he limits his minutes to keep him as fresh as possible for March. Though our out of conference schedule is loaded, so that might not be all that often. Clingan is unselfish and I can definitely see a scenario where Karaban, Castle, and Spencer shoulder more of the scoring load than some think.

If Clingan puts up those numbers on this team, he is an All-American and we are a #1 seed. We have at least four other quality options and if he if he has that type of production, he will be toying with the opponents.

The foul trouble concerns me a bit. I’d like to see DC pick his spots on where he tries to block a shot versus contest or alter it. Not getting the third foul late in the first half or early in the second half and having to sit down extended minutes will be very important.

You reminded me of the poster who would always write dissertations when posting here. Haven't seen him in awhile, unless they're reformed.

For DC free throws have been a problem. You don't win championships without near perfect free throwing.

"Near perfect" is an exaggeration.

Clingan was a freshman who shot 52% from the line. And the good thing is many times freshmen get better.

Sanogo's season free throw percentage each year:
Freshman: 58%
Sophomore: 69%
Junior: 77%

Sticking around 14 points for Donovan. Most of his points come off dump offs, rim runs, free throws. Very efficient scorer, but 17-20 is more for guys who create offense at a high level.

I agree with this and we should pump the brakes on how much Clingan will be a focal point of the offense in the way that Sanogo was. Sanogo was a uniquely gifted low-post scorer with next-level footwork, instincts, and touch.

We're not going to be posting Clingan up as often (which is fine) and he will get his largely on assists and being set up for easy buckets. This isn't taking anything away from Clingan -- a huge skill is positioning yourself in the right place to take advantage of his physical attributes, which he does extremely well -- but he's not likely scoring 20 ppg or taking 15 shots.

17-20 is exceptionally unlikely because he can't create his own shot. He doesn't need that kind of offense to make the league anyways, and post-ups are inefficient. Sanogo was a freak at post efficiency creating his own shot, and it STILL wasn't a very good shot for the team much of the time. Our team improved when he stopped dancing in the lane so much.

More likely to score 11-13 on those high % dump offs, rim runs, etc.

Freshman year he had foul trouble at times and free throws were a problem. If he cleans those up forget about it. Love his tough demeanor.

In a Candid Coaches article about whether Edey can repeat as national player of the year. Clingan got some votes for winning it.

"(Donovan) Clingan because he had a very high O-rating and usage on the best team in the country. He just needs to maintain that level of efficiency with more minutes and his counting stats (points and rebounds) will be player-of-the-year level. He also really impacts the game defensively. He is a very versatile player, meaning you don't have to be married to one style with him. He makes you great in transition because of his ability to rim-run, but also he is an elite half-court player who makes others better by putting pressure on the rim in the pick-and-roll."
