Lol...the Big East brand. Let me hear those flowery words again, "THE BIG EAST BRAND". Soon this powerful brand will include UCONN, Rutgers (soon to be the flagship school of the conference), USF, Houston (the 5th or 6th team in Texas behind AtM, UT, TCU, Baylor, Tech) the fifth school in North Carolina, ECU, the 6th school in Florida, UCF. Temple, which competes with PSU and Pitt...Temple...you know, the same team that got booted out a few short years ago for its horrific commitment to football (of course the budget of Temple and the State of Penn certainly has improved since that time...oh that's right, facts are a stubborn thing), Navy isn't coming aboard a sinking ship, Air Force is staying in the MWC. The Big East is a zombie conference. WVU is doing more to get into the SEC than UCONN into the ACC if you can fathom that. UofL practically has their bags packed for the Big 12 welcome party. Wrap your head around it. It is a zombie conference. But you'll have Notre Dame kind of in the conference.
True. It's time for bullet biting. Just jump. Let's go. Don't cling to a sinking vessel. Try to swim.

The Big East is still the 1st or 2nd best basketball conference in the country. The Big East is a "brand name" for basketball.

The Big East is still a BCS AQ conference, do you want to field the best possible home for our basketball team and our football, or do we just fade into oblivion?

But yeah, let's drop ND and the basketball onlies. Play in a crap basketball conference, while we try and make it a go of it with C-USA and MAC leftovers.

I'm sorry, but this is where I think you're wrong. I think ND does join a football conference if they have to play their non rev sports in the onlies conference. They don't want that. ND has a strong athletic program. None of the onlies can compete with that. Unless ND wants to disregard the remainder of their student athletes - which they do not - they would be pressured to start thinking about joining the 10 or the acc. Maybe not immediately, but it would start the discussion.

Notre Dame isn't giving up it's independence to find a home for it's fringe olympic sports. It's just not.

ND either stays in a combined Big East or a catholic only Big East. If they have to find a home for something like womens field hockey, they'll find it.

They are not making multimillion dollar decisions, and foregoing football independence because they may have an issue finding a home for some small sports.

The only way ND joins a conference is if there are 4-16 team superconferences that break off from the NCAA and hold their own championship.

If you are counting ND as a football school that's just wrong. ND is a nonfootball school for the purposes of Big East sports.
There are 5 nonfootball schools that play baseball including ND. Men's soccer is 16 teams; 8 played by schools that don't play Big East Football. Women's soccer is the same 16 schools; 8 played by schools that don't play Big East Football.

Men's Lacrosse, 7 schools; 5 played by schools that don't play Big East Football.

Too lazy to correct all the rest.

Ummm...it was published today at 27 September 2011, at 12:42 pm, to be precise.

With respect to ND voting on the football contract:

Note the headline:

Notre Dame gets good news on conference expansion front

Notre Dame gets good news on conference expansion front

The Pac 12 says it will not expand beyond 12 teams and the Big East says its remaining football schools are committed to staying together.

And too lazy to realize that would be one heck of a circle jerk baseball conference, track conference, vb conference, etc.

Here's also a point. In an SI piece today by Stew Mandell, the sec is proposing eliminating the 2 team conference limit in the BCS, and adding another bowl, the Cotton. Let's see, three from the SEC, three from the big, two from the pac, two from the 12, how many is that?

Not saying you're wrong, but do you have a link about ND voting no to the new contract? Even if they voted no, they weren't the only ones to have voted against it. I've said it before but it would've sold ourselves short to have renewed a contract with ESPN instead of on an open market with NBC.

How does ND "use" BE when it's convenient for them. They are a basketball only member. That's their obligation to the Big East. I doubt they ever join a conference in football and if they did it sure as hell wasn't going to be the Big East.

As I mentioned before the Big East bowl line up sucks, and it would be even worse without ND. The Sun Bowl had a Big East/ND tie in and now our #2nd place bowl, Champs Sports Bowl, has a ND tie-in as well.

So, for those pro-splitting, you want to have the 3rd best basketball conference in our footprint, hurt our bowl lineup, and form a conference where the majority of teams are from the MAC and C-USA?[/quot
"....where the majority of teams are from the MAC and C-USA"
The BE has to get the teams from somewhere for football and the pickings are slim.
As an aside, ND as basketball only doesn't work for us. It only helps further the agenda for the basketball only schools. The BE should have added 2 football playing schools instead of Marquette and Depaul but they didn't and if we stay in the BE we can expect similar decisions in the future.
If we can't get into the ACC, the football schools need to split and then make invites to a new conference. It would be a much weaker basketball conference but I can't see any other viable alternative if we want to continue with Div. 1 football. Uconn can't be in a conference where the non football schools have more votes.
