Most All-Time #1 Seeds. Bolded are the teams that are all going to move up the list. UNC may add to their lead, but perhaps Iowa State will get their first. I guess there's an outside chance Arizona breaks their tie with Virginia, but that would be dumb. The NCAA website had an asterisk next to Kansas and Louisville, subtracting their #1 seeds. I added them back because we all know they happened. I think Kansas only lost one...

1. North Carolina 17
2. Kansas 16
3. Duke 14
4. Kentucky 12
5. Arizona 7
5. Virginia 7
7. UConn 6
8. Georgetown 5
8. Gonzaga 5
8. Michigan State 5
8. Oklahoma 5
8. Purdue 5
13. DePaul 4
13. Illinois 4
13. Ohio State 4
13. UCLA 4
13. Villanova 4
18. Houston 3
18. Indiana 3
18. Louisville 3
18. Michigan 3
18. St. John’s 3
18. Stanford 3
18. Syracuse 3
18. UNLV 3

Some real LOLs on here from some programs that think they're big time.

Thanks, The numbers are a bit wierd as they start in 1979, so UCLA and Indiana are low for that reason.

Looking at UConn:
1990--lost in Elite 8 to Dook
1996--lost in Sweet 16 to Miss. State
1999--Beat Dook for first Championship
2006--Lost in Elite 8 to George Mason in OT
2009--Lost in Final 4 to Michigan State

You just HAD to remind me about 2006! :)

Right. But 1979 is now 45 years ago. If you've only been very good a few times for half a century, that's pretty telling. Since 1979, they have a combined 3 titles.
I think starting in 1979 is good because the modern era should be the focus for most of our discussions. But I would not call them "all-time" records. Before 1979 there was no seeding like now--so i would just replace "all time #1 seeds" with "#1 seeds since 1979," I think the modern era begins with the 40 team seeded version in 1979, rather than the 1985 version that had 64 teams, but i also see a lot of analysis with that as the starting point.

I mean, I understand the ways the game has changed means this doesn't cover the entire history of the college game, but it's still an accurate term.

Just like Most Week All-Time at #1 (which we're about to add to) only starts in the late 1930s, or most NCAA Titles in 1939, or most Consensus First Team AAs cuts out about a decade of play. All these stats miss something, but all add richness and depth to our understanding of the game's history.

Ralph Sampson boosted Virginia. I remember the Mark Aguire and Terry Cummings DePaul years. Did Glen Robinson and Wayman Tisdale boost Purdue and Oklahoma? They must not have done seeds during the Wooden years with Alcinder and Walton. This must start after that.

So this is a metric which one could use when trying to make the case of UConn not being a blue blood. I am going to forget about it. Or I guess you could look it as we almost have as many national championships as we do 1 seeds. Which in itself is fairly remarkable. As is 6 Final Fours and 5 National Championships. That is high level efficiency in the area of make the most out of every opportunity.

I mean, why? They're Top 10 and have more than "traditional" blue bloods Indiana and UCLA, as well as teams that consider themselves in our league or close to it, like Louisville and Villanova. The top 4 here are obviously the top 4 programs of the modern era. We aren't going to look good next to them almost no matter what.

Other than Kansas, strangely. LOL at Kansas, who couldn't win an NCAAT with Wilt but we scored two with Tyler Olander.

Extends their lead on 2nd place, now with 18 #1 seeds.

We're solidly top 10.

The Big 12 looking a little light with Kansas, Arizona and Houston. Could use some help.
