I think it is most likely because he tried out a da PG and currently he isn't a true PG.

One of the best things you can do for a young player is stopping Mark Gottfried from coaching him.

Obviously he didn't do Rodney a whole helluva lot of good!! If Givony has any sense of what didn't impress the coaches then this lends itself to a poor coaching freshman year where guys like JC are sure to create an opportunity to improve but like Fishy said, not Gottfried. Nice guy and all it seems but Fishy has made that call since his Alabama days here and it makes sense!

Regardless of the blessing in disguise, it's a rather scathing commentary... Seems too harsh. Send him to UCONN early. Like 99% of UCONN fans, I'm thrilled we got him...

A key member of last summer's undefeated U18 FIBA Americas championship team, Purvis did not make it past the first round of cuts this time, seemingly looking like he's at a serious crossroad at his point of his career. Overdribbling for long stretches, taking bad shots, turning the ball over and struggling to make his presence felt defensively, Purvis could not exhibit his considerable talent in a consistent fashion as he continues to be plagued by bad habits and poor fundamentals. His inconsistent perimeter shot was a major hindrance to his chances of making the roster, as his flawed mechanics did not do him any favors in trying to establish himself a threat without the ball in his hands, while his poor decision making made it difficult for him to operate as a ball-dominant lead guard like he was accustomed to at the high school level.

Commentary? They play the games that matter. If the kid can play he'll prove it.

Not to be flip, but was that supposed to make us feel better about Purvis? That evaluation makes him sound like the worst parts of Jerome Dyson.

After seeing this thread title, I was hoping it was about how he got mono and physically couldn't go.

The problem with recruiting sites and draft sites is that they overreact - positively or negatively - to small sample sizes. If you watched Kemba Walker play as a junior in only the week we lost to Marquette and St. John's, you would say that he was a steaming pile of suck who was athletic but didn't have a clue how to play. And if you watched Jamal Coombs-McDaniel only the week we played Georgetown and Providence, you'd think he was an All-America candidate.

Like many old Yard-timers, I watched Rip look like a fish out of water in the McDonald's Game and thought he was a marginal Big East talent at best. He stuffed himself on the rim trying to dunk in a particular low-water mark. Safe to say he was the goods.

Of course, all things being equal, you'd always like to see your guys play well and get good reviews, but it isn't a cause for celebration or concern either way. Sometimes a bad day is just a bad day.

That reads like a Boneyard post about Taliek. He worked out fine, just fine.

That's too bad, playing on a USA team has always been a good leap for our guys with Kemba the most recent. But then again, he's Kemba.

He has an entire school year with our coaching staff, most importantly KO himself, before he has to step on the floor and play a real game. I'm pretty confident his bad habits can be ironed out in that time.

He had no real chance to make the team.

Donovan is the coach. Coach K has fingers in it, Jim B. has fingers in it. Tony Bennett is an assistant coach.

Everyone got their guy a spot...Donovan got Frazier, K got Sulaimon, JB got Jerami Grant, Bennett got Mike Tobey. Winslow, a target of both Florida and Duke got a spot. Okafor, Duke target, got a spot. Sean Miller has pull and there's an Arizona signee on there for good measure as well.

Not a lot left.

Should be good motivation for RP...there is nothing like a little rejection to light a fire under your butt. When you can't play a real game for over a year, extra motivation is a huge benefit!

Bingo and hence why people should take Givony's (Florida grad and writer) criticism with a grain of salt!!

Kris Dunn was also cut and, Cooley was one of the floor coaches out there.

I'm sure Cooley doesn't mind though. If Dunn is ever in need of motivation he can be in his ear about being cut from Team USA.

As will Ollie with Purvis. Big difference is Ollie wasn't out there to influence selection.

Yeah, it reads like a hatchet job. Completely over the top.

Fishy nailed it

In Saturday’s and Sunday’s sessions, Purvis had begun succeeding as a scorer and perimeter shooter in a camp light on pure shooters. For the U.S. in last season’s FIBA Americas U18 Championships, Purvis had averaged 7 points, and he made 38.5 percent of his 3-pointers as a freshman at N.C. State.

The committee members who chose the squad—including senior national team coaches Mike Krzyzewski of Duke and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse—opted instead for such perimeter players as Ryan Arcidiacono of Villanova, James Robinson of Pitt and Michael Frazier of Florida.

Purvis ... his considerable talent

To me, that's the key takeaway. He won't be on the floor for us for another year and a half when this snapshot in time will be dust in the wind.
