Here are some exciting and fun statistics until the Temple game on Saturday.

1. Geno wants Stewie to take 20 shots per game. In 16 games she has 220 shots or 13.75 per contest. Stewie has played 28 minutes per game and sat the other 12 minutes.

2. Bria Hartley has 74 assists, while Moriah Jefferson has 73. MoJeff has 38 steals, Hartley 31. Bria has 28 turnovers, MoJeff has 29. Very similar. But shooting stats are different. Hartley has taken 186 shots, MoJeff only 117. Hartley has hit on 44%, MoJeff 55%. (MoJeff has 2 blocks.)

3. Brianna Banks is averaging 20.0 minutes per game this year. Last year she was averaging 17.1 minutes when she was injured. Scoring average this year = 5.4 pts vs 7.3 pts last year.

4. Saniya Chong continues to impress. 322 minutes w/ only 13 turnovers and 16 personal fouls. She has 109 points, 36 rebounds, 24 assists, 12 steals and 6 blocked shots. :D

5. The 3 pt shooting race has tightened up. KML now has 20 3's. Hartley has 20 also (32 more shots), Chong has 19, Stewie 17, Banks 12 and MoJeff has 8. TLAW and Morgan Tuck have 7.

6. Last year, Stef Dolson averaged 7.1 rebounds per game and blocked 58 shots. This year, she is pulling down 10.0 rebounds per game and already has 39 blocks. Scoring average is the same at 13.6 last year vs 13.7 so far this year.

7. Stewie had 35 assists last year in 36 games. She has 50 already this year. Her scoring is up from 13.8 per game to 18.4p ts/game. :p

8. UConn has 342 assists on 515 baskets (66.4%). Opponents have only 153 assists and 290 turnovers.Wow..!

9. UConn has blocked 139 shots. That is 14.3% of all opponents shots taken. UConn also has 157 steals. Together, UConn averages 22.8 blocks/steals per game.

10. UConn opponents are making 61% of their free throws. Last year, the average was 69%. Free throw defense has greatly improved.

Go Huskies..!!

Really enjoy these posts David.
We forget sometimes that an assist requires someone else to make a shot. When you shoot 50% as a team and your opponent shoots 30% as a team, before even considering style of offense run, you have a 40% better chance of getting an assist than your opponent.

If Geno would let her off the bench, TLaw would be kicking butt in the 3-point race! :)

Interesting stuff! Stef has really improved her rebounding, and Stewie has improved, well, everything.

I love the improvement in FT shooting defense. That's an overlooked part of the game. :)

I believe that the comment by Geno was not intended as a target, but just a way to get Stewart to shoot more.

Add in 133 turnover not including steals and you have 31.1 possessions per game where the opponent never gets a shot.

Agree with point 1. comment - get her to have a more aggressive mind set from the opening tap.
On #9. of the 70% of their possessions where they do get a shot they only are making 30% so they come up empty 80% of their offensive possessions! (I know I am not taking into account offensive rebounds and fouls, but that is still a frightening number even plus or minus a few percentage points..)

What would be a good estimate of the average number of possessions per game?

I'll take a guess....;) A 40 minute game has 2,400 seconds. With the 30 second shot clock, minimum possessions should be 80 total. That would be 40 each team. But teams shoot earlier in the clock, turn the ball over, get offensive rebounds, etc... My guess would be 70-75 average. Better teams get more possessions. (More offensive rebounds, more steals, etc...) But the possessions should be fairly close since the other team gets the ball after a basket. I think against Duke we had 82. I leave it to smarter BYers than me to get the exact number....

P.S. - Obviously, against teams like Oregon, number of possessions goes way up. Likewise, teams w/ slower, deliberate offenses it would go down.

In the pros it's around 100 per game.

In Men's college bball, it's around 80.

Probably the same for the women.

In 16 games, UCONN has attempted 1022 shots and has 187 turnovers for 1209 possessions for an average of 75.4 per game. They have also taken 285 free throws so we need to add some more possessions. The opponents have taken 972 shots, plus 290 turnovers for 1262 possessions, or 78.9 per game. The opponents have also taken 132 free throws.

70-75 sounds right. UConn had 71 possessions excluding offensive rebounding extensions in the semi game against ND last year, which seems like an average game. They had 88 against crazy Oregon in December, and that would be on the very high side.

David you the man. Or machine , I haven't figured out which yet. However , it's good to see the team as a whole is performing well. Its also a testament to the coaching staff to keep the team sharp and focused even when playing an unranked opponent.

Thanks for all you do to keep us BY'ers aware.

Fairly good numbers. Someone did link a site that had some stats on number of possessions, and I believe Oregon is leading the nation at something like 100/game. A team like Villanova would be at the other extreme of around 55. And I think most teams come in around 65-80

But that would include possessions where they got an offensive rebounds, which they have done 200 times, and even when you grab a board and reset, that's really one possession. So that's more like 63 possessions a game. FTs are harder to quantify, but 1 possesion for two FTs seems like a reasonable percentage for the different scenarios, so adding about an average of 8 possessions puts the average at about 71.

Possessions begin with every reset of the 30 second clock. OR create new possessions.

Couldn't find any possession rankings listing for the WCBB, but teamrankings has the figures for the men and UConn guys are averaging 68.5 possessions per game and the top team is at 85.

Speaking of Oregon, there is another team out west that makes the Ducks look pedestrian by comparison. Sacramento State is 3rd in the nation in scoring behind Oregon and Baylor and is tossing up 3s at the rate of 43 a game and hitting slightly over one third of them to get about 42 points a game from the perimeter. They shoot 83 FGAs a game, so more than half are from behind the arc. Seems to be working as they're 11-1 despite having the #339 ranked defense.

Eh, then you have to have an observer's game report summary for each game as simply looking at stats can't tell you how many OTs were quick tips, though I guess from what you're saying then getting a carom off the rim and immediately putting it back would count as two possessions, which sounds wrong but I guess that's so. Men's stats don't seem to count it that way though. And of course many OTs are off shots that don't catch iron.
