I'm going to Florida for a few days soon. I kind of have an idea of what's already there, but if any of you have been in that neck of the woods before, what would you recommend?

Things to do in Ft. Lauderdale, in August? Sweat. Dodge the hurricanes. Dodge the bull sharks.

Actually, go there to avoid the hurricanes that recently frequent Connecticut.

Katie-I live near Ft. Lauderdale. Let me know what you're looking for. The beach would be the number one recommendation. There is a bar on the corner of Las Olas Blvd and A1A called The Elbow Room which is a Ft. Lauderdale institution. There are alot of nice (expensive) restuarants and shops on Las Olas. A fun way to get around and see Ft. lauderdale is to hop on the water taxi which are boats that will take you up and down the intercoastal. The boat trip is narrated and they point out who owns which mansion and which yacht as you motor along. The taxi stops at alot of good bars and restaurants. I think an all day pass is $20. If you want serious shopping and have transportation, go to the Sawgrass Outlet Mall....it is the second largest mall in the US after the Mall of the americas in MN. To get there from downtown, take US 1/Federal Highway South to 595 West and exit at 136 avenue. Out west, not to far from the mall, you can take airboat rides in the everglades. Hope that helps. Let me know what else you are looking for.

Thanks! Those all sound great, besides the bars I'm not a drinker.

Go to Dania Jai Alai. I think they just renovated it - has a casino there also.

Remember Bernstein's Hartford Jai Alai?

If you like this sort of thing, there is nothing like it anywhere that we have found. Inland and slightly north of Ft. Laud, not far, is Butterfly World. It's a real tourist attraction, numerous rooms filled with butterflies you can look at and identify. Thousands of butterflies in maybe a hundred different types. Relaxing music playing in the background. It's peaceful, educational and, in our opinion, a great time.

If you want a tour of the canals and mansions along them, there is a boat that leave just west of the main restaurant strip on Las Olas Blvd. called the Carrie B, Takes about 90 minutes. Water taxis are a good, cheap way to get around the oceanfront -Los Olas area. A lot of good restaurants in town, most somewhat pricey. Some along the ocean just north of Las Olas are fine One a block off the ocean on Seabreeze close to Las Olas called Coconuts was one of our favorites. It's along a canal. On the far north end of town is Lauderdale by the Sea which has some okay restaurants, but usually busy, although it might be different during the summer. We have a time share in the area but haven't been there in hot weather.

If you are a shopper and have transportation available, there is a place called Festival Flea Market on Sample Rd. In Pompano Beach, about a 15 minute drive. The place is huge and has an enormous variety of merchandise from lower end to middle and high end. Flea market is not quite accurate for the place. There is some duplication among the stalls and kiosks. The place on Sunrise that was mentioned above is a dump.

Have fun.
