PONTE VEDRA BEACH -- Tampa has pulled out of consideration for the 2014 American Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament due to a scheduling conflict with hockey at Tampa Bay Times Forum, USF President Judy Genshaft said Tuesday.
it's also believed that the new conference's women's basketball tournament will stay in Connecticut, perhaps moving from Hartford to the Mohegan Sun casino. Memphis has emerged as a front-runner for the men's event, with the university's incoming interim president telling the Commercial Appeal he is "very, very optimistic" about the event going to FedEx Forum, home of the NBA's Grizzlies.

Aresco has an uncanny ability to make the wrong decision every time.

Which makes him a perfect fit for this clown conference.

I'll be shocked if it is played anywhere except Louisville or Providence.

Holy Crap! I just google mapped where Memphis was. That is in the middle of nowhere. I guess it would be worth a trip to support our Huskies and we could visit Graceland.

Never been to Memphis and would like to check it out at least once. Live music scene is supposed to be good, I could check Graceland off the list and try the local BBQ. Could think of worse places to have a built-in excuse for a guys trip, with the premise that we'll look back one day and laugh at these years when we were adrift in this clusterfrack of a conference, reminiscing that we at least got a trip to Memphis out of it. Oh, and maybe a few more trips to New Orleans (for games at Tulane) than I would have otherwise.

Well there's the BBQ and Beale Street. I'm trying to think positive here. Somebody help me out with more. Please!

Hell no. I don't want our conference tourney to turn into the Memphis Invitational. I've been to Memphis, been there done that, so would almost certainly never make it to the tourney. Ideally, I want a neutral site. Baltimore or Philadelphia would be good.

Memphis Zoo...

It's not MSG but it's not a bad place to blow a few days. Fairly easy to get to, decent hotels, and temps in the 60's in March. Wouldn't want it to be permantly there, but okay on a rotation. The FedEx Forum is a decent NBA quality facility.

Chicken and waffles. Freshly fried crispy chicken and sweet homestyle waffles drizzled with honey.

And to be honest, you can spend 3-4 four nights and still not hit all the good clubs, bars and music joints on Beale Street.

No one is asking Uconn fans to move their family to Memphis or to start working there. It's a weekend party and Memphis is every bit as good as New Orleans when it comes to partying it up.

Temple and UCONN need to ensure they get a northeast tournament promised for one of the first 3 tournaments. If the tournament is held in Memphis the first year, then it may never leave. With Rutgers leaving (not that they have many fans) and Tulsa and Tulane joining, this thing may never leave the south.

Well prepare yourself to be shocked because it will not be in Louisville or Providence. Both stupid selections to begin with.

This is the UConn board. Anything other than over the top nonsensical apocalyptic doom and whining over everything regarding the new conference will not be tolerated. Even when they name a perfectly reasonable site as the frontrunner for the tournament. Memphis could be the Garden of Eden and people would still hate it just because! Brand new beautiful NBA arena that seats 18,000. Check. Rabid basketball city both college and pro. Check. 3rd largest city in the southeast in what is now a southern league for the most part. Check. Obviously it makes no sense to hold it there. Oh yeah. Wait. It makes a lot of sense.

I'm all for sensical apocalyptic doom and whining about the new conference because I can't stand that we are in it. The nonsensical stuff has gotten tiring.

Memphis ain't bad, especially for a 4/5 night stay. Unless you don't care for some good music, decent March weather, partying and bbq/food. If you don't think that they will pimp out the City during tourney week then you don't know Memphis.

Concerts, spring break type contests, street music, the joint will be jumping. It won't be as historic as NYC but certainly more intimate and catering to the league. I have no problem with 'southern' Memphis, its what visitors make of it.

Isn't that enough? It's been 20 years since I was there but I do recall a ton of strip bars. And there's a dog track/casino on the other side of the river.

They really should have had it in NYC or Philly the first season and then moved it to Memphis next season.

By the way:

http://www.criterion.com/films/2057-mystery-train

Aloof teenage Japanese tourists, a frazzled Italian widow, and a disgruntled British immigrant all converge in the city of dreams—which, in Mystery Train is Memphis. Made with its director’s customary precision and wit, this triptych of stories pays playful tribute to the home of Stax Records, Sun Studio, Graceland, Carl Perkins, and, of course, the King, who presides over the film like a spirit. Mystery Train is one of Jarmusch’s very best movies, a boozy and beautiful pilgrimage to an iconic American ghost town and a paean to the music it gave the world.

If you live in Atlanta you have no business talking about crime ridden dumps.

I use to live in Memphis, to be honest not sure I would ever move back, with that being said I still think Memphis is very good choice, it is a very under rated city with great food, bars, casino, golf and the Madison and Peabody are great hotels.

Also, it will have great fan support from the locals which what this dumpster fire of a conference needs. I for one will be there.

That is why I said I live in Atlanta as I was being sarcastic. As least Atlanta is a lot more cosmopolitian city as Memphis is just a poor dump. I have no interest what so ever going there unless it means supporting my Huskies. I rather have it in Orlando or even Philly.
