As we were watching games this weekend, we noticed that Sunday's games provided one of the teams to each of the Sweet 16 games, and their opponents were the winners on Monday.
What got my wife thinking was this means that the teams that played Sunday have an extra day of rest as compared to their opponents that played Monday. And this regardless of whether or not their travel is local(ish), like Gonzaga to Portland or quite long, like UConn to Portland. My wife doesn't understand - and I'm not sure I do - how this is particularly fair to 1/2 the teams. Is the extra day of rest (5 instead of 4 or 6 instead of 5) not important? Especially to a team that might have a banged up player or 2?
Any thoughts on this? Why the system they followed?
