Inspired by a post I saw elsewhere, I have an idea for a summertime quiz. This isn't a quiz in the sense that I have the answers, but I bet collectively we can identify the answers.
Which national champion had the worst loss during the season?
Worst can mean two different things:

  1. Highest RPI, or maybe worst record, of a team defeating the eventual NC
  2. Largest margin of victory of a team defeating the eventual NC
Same question repeated for team making the Final Four (and could be extended, if anyone is interested)

The 2001-2002 Final Four Duke team went 31-4 (16-0) in the ACC. One of the losses was to TOLEDO

I remember reading the morning paper and seeing that score and

On final 4: The 1996 UConn lost to Syracuse, which I'm pretty sure didn't have a winning record that year.

For NC, it'll probably be the 97 Tenn team.

The '96-97 Lady Vols lost 10 games to teams ranked in the final coaches' Top 25. UConn's loss to Syracuse was a head-scratcher considering Syracuse had lost its previous game to Duke by 44.

With 10 losses, I figured one of them would be bad! So much for that ...

95, 98, 02, 09, 10, 12 were undefeated teams
00, 01, 06, 07, 08, 13 only lost to top teams

Havent found the losses yet for 2011 TAMU (5).

In 2005, Baylor lost to Nebraska in 3OT. The Huskers did not make the NCAAs.

In 2011, TAMU's 5 losses were to Baylor (#1, #1, #3--3 times 63-60, 58-67, 58-61 ), Duke (#5--once 61-58) and K-State (Unranked, record -21-11, eliminated first round of the NCAA tournament -- once 67-71)

Yeah I considered the Vols ten loss season, but I didn't recall that any were that weak. Sounds like Cat confirmed my weak guess.

Yeah, those are the types of games I was looking for.

Did you think, after that loss, that the team was on track for a FF?
