It is an old English phrase that is found in various English works and is found in the Oxford Dictionary of English. It was used by Vernon Miller in the Doo Wop song, "The Letter". Others insist the word sung by Vernon Green is puppetutes. Adding to the confusion is the Vernon has told the story in more than one form. The question is therefore is the lyric of Steve Miller based on a miss hearing of the earlier song. Pompatus (or alt spelling: pompitous) means to parade with splendor like the cock of the walk.
