Is it worth the trip tomorrow from lower Fairfield County?

Never been, but considering. I know a few of you Yarders 'up North' have been.

For example: parking suggestions, best times, fireworks, things to see/do, etc....?

If you want to see/hear a ton of free bands, and don't mind a mob of people jostling for 100 varieties of super fried food (most of which is guaranteed to clean you out), then its for you. Otherwise, you could spend the afternoon touring the NL Rev War sights, if you have not seen them. Then again, Benadict Arnold burned most of them down. A visit to Dutches' Tavern may be in order as well.

Must say that the Sat nite fireworks, subsidized by your friendly local Indian casino, are spectacular!!!! Among the best I've ever seen. But expect to share the big show with 200,000 people as every square foot of space with a view will be taken. Crowds line both shores, up the hills, off-shore, etc. VERY packed at the pier in downtown near 'ground zero'. The exit traffic jam is legendary all across town(s).

Check the map of 'ground zero' at their website.

I second what sledog said. If you like the "fair" atmosphere and want to see one of, if not, the state's best fireworks then it's probably worth checking out once. Just be careful of old men driving. A few years ago a senior mistook the gas pedal for the brake and plowed through the crowd.

Take the train to New Haven, switch trains to go to New London, the train station is right at the waterfront, right in the heart of Sailfest. Maybe inquire if the train from Fairfield Cty goes all the way to New London and what time is the last train back to Fairfield Cty. Stay for the fireworks, if possible, you can watch them from the train station.
