44 points 8-13 from 3, he's the one guy who can break Ray's record, its why I think Ray will play as long as he possibly can, despite what Ray says he wants that record.

Ray Allen - 6'5" in bare feet.
Steph Curry - 6'1" in bare feet.

Steph can do it, but it's going to be tougher for him than for Ray - gets harder to get off your shots when you get older than 30 if you have to rely on explosiveness to get your shot off.

Steph Curry relies on his quick release for scoring which is not going anywhere. The bigger hurdle for him will be injuries, he has had lots of ankle problems. Ray's number is pretty big. Will take some longevity and consistency to beat it.

Im not saying he will break Rays record but he has the best shot, if he shoots 13 3's a game he has a shot lol. Curry has had some ankle injuries but for the most part he's pretty durable, I think he will be around for a while once he gets into his 30s will be the question he has good genes having his father being an NBA player. I hope he doesn't break Ray's record but if it happens it happens it won't make Ray any less of a player, he will be in long into the HOF by then if it does happen.

Just doing some quick math: Let's say Ray ends his career with 3050 (138 more which is doable in a year and a half). Curry would need 2254 more to get to 3051. Just for reference, only two players have more than 2000 in their career (Ray and Reggie).

If Curry can keep to his averages of 400 attempts/year and shooting 44%, it would take him 12.8 more years to break Ray's record. That would mean a 17 or 18 year career going until he's 37 or 38 with no drop off in takes and makes. That's a lot to ask.

The primary reason Ray has the record is his incredible work ethic and that he is still making 100+ threes/year even in his mid 30s. Curry can definitely shoot a higher volume for the next few years to help offset a dropoff in production later in his career so it's possible he can get there, but he would have to be in Ray like shape in his mid 30s to do it.

Disagree - sure his release is quicker than most, but at 6/1, which is small, he's not getting his shot off over a bigger defender unless he can get himself open. Watching highlights, a huge portion of his 3s come of his own work. His quickness makes defenders back off, lest be blown by, and then he steps back for the 3. When his quickness goes, after 32 or so, he's going to find it much harder to get his own 3, because he's not going to be able to make defenders back off to respect the drive.

Ray, OTOH, was always much more of a guy who ran off screens. Never needed to beat a guy with the dribble in order to set up his 3 pt shot. Add that to his height and quick release, and it's clear why a guy like Ray has been around so long and has been so effective into his 30s. A 6/1 guy who relies on explosive quickness to set up his shot is either going to have to recreate his game or suffer a downturn when he wanes.

As Curry's athleticism declines, it will get tougher and tougher for a 6-1 dude to get clean looks regardless of release. And the NBA isn't going to get smaller in the next decade.

Durant on the other hand has a shot. Not sure what his numbers are but older he gets he can become a catch and shoot guy easy with his height

Don't think that's even in the realm of possibility. He's got 806 so 2244 short of the 3050 mark I used above. He only takes 325/year and shoots at 38%. At that clip, it would take him a little more than 18 years to get there. That would require a 24 or 25 year career playing until he's 43 or 44 with no drop off. Not going to happen.

A better chance than the 3pt record, but also unlikely. He needs 24,602 to reach Kareem at 38,387. For 6.5 years, he's averaged 2,111 pts/year. It would take a little over 11.5 years at the same rate to get there. Just don't see him scoring 2000+ a year at 35. However, Kobe did score over 2100 at 34 years old, so it's possible I guess.

*aside* Thanks for all the stat exercises - love doing these.

Curry is a huge longshot to catch him. To think Ray Allen is looking in the rearview to outpace guys 15yrs younger is Michael Jordan level paranoia. Possible I suppose, but a ton more likely that Ray plays NBA basketball because he enjoys it, it pays really well and because he can.
