UCONN is working on the sixth undefeated season.... just two games away... and that had me thinking. We have a 35-0, a 40-0, and three 39-0's. This will be a 38-0 season. Does anyone know how it is determined how many games a team can play in a season? Why not 39 games this season?
No in season tournament. The NCAA is hopefully 6 games, the conference tournament if you are a high seed is typically three games - so ...
You can schedule 29 games in a regular season - plus 9 post season - 38 game season
OR
You can schedule 27 games in a regular season AND attend an in-season tournament. Most tournaments are 3 games which leads to a 30 game regular season plus 9 post season = 39 games
Occasionally an in-season tournament can be 4 games - 31 + 9 = 40.
They actually made a mistake in scheduling this year - they had too many non-conference games and tried to convince one of those teams to either join them in a tournament or postpone for a year without success.
