UConn and VPI will both be invited to the AAU soon and both be invited to the B1G right after that. That completes the schools missions as well as the B1Gs. It's the most obvious yet un talked about thing in college sports and research rumors these days.

Virginia Tech has being aiming for AAU status since 2012 and recently started a new medical school in nearby Roanoke VA, which may be important as all B1G schools have a medical school (Michigan St just opened theirs in Grand Rapids, U Illinois' main medical campus is in Chicago and Indiana and Purdue operate a joint medical school in Indianapolis). Right now, they are behind UConn with respect to academic metrics and rank #70 in US news (UConn is #57), which puts them in the bottom third of the B1G.

I also felt that their football first sports mentality fits better with the SEC.

That said, the B1G wants the DC market and needs a second school, preferably in Virginia to lock the market down. Virginia Tech would be competitive in football right away in the B1G and its academic side would be enhanced by joining the B1G. If UVA is tied too tight to the ACC to be pried loose unless the entire ACC unravels Virginia Tech would be a viable back-up plan for them. Especially, if Virginia Tech would be paired with UConn.

PS – Anyone ever notice there is a Boneyard Creek right in the middle of U Illinois’ campus in Urbana?

VT is a really good candidate for the B10, but don't expect them to join the AAU. They are not Georgia Tech when it comes to breadth across all departments and fields, and this really counts for the AAU.

I would love VT in the Big10!

I thought the VPI - ECU game was one of the more interesting, behind the Navy - UCONN game of course. I respect the VPI program as a former B.E. member but the large NC state university in the NC/VA area which happens to not be in the ACC has a lot going on. 2 years in a row over VPI.
