It was a Mel Brooks movie, of course, but that doesn't mean Brooks wrote that line. Buck Henry did a lot of the scriptwriting for his movies, but I don't know.

That's it! I saw an interview with Mel Brooks, he said he hired Pryor to write lines for the sheriff's role. None of them were any good so Brooks wrote those and Pryor wrote all of Mongo's stuff.

on edit nevermind I saw the "Pryor" post. I did not realize he worked on this movie.
