Phil Nolan looks like he just made the best decision he's ever made.

And he's lefty.

Which got me thinking.

How many lefties have we had that played appreciable minutes?

I'm thinking Lyman DePriest and Tyler Olander, and then I draw a blank.

Lefties are about 10% of the world population.

Figure 10 spots, that's one for a lefty. So every 3-4 years we should have 1 lefty.

Calhoun has been coach for 26ish years. That should be about 6.5-8 lefties in the top 10 rotation.

This begs the question - have we done all we can to recruit lefties? Has the program been hurt by a failure to go after left handed talent?

EDIT - was Beverly left handed? I'm picturing his tit-high dribble in my mind and I can't recall.

This isn't baseball where lefty/righty makes much of a difference.

It makes a difference on the playground and in high school ball when nobody knows you well. I always blew by people until they realized I was a lefty, then they locked me up!

Come on, remember him throwing down that big dunk on the break against Texas?

Johnny Selvie is the greatest left handed basketball player ever.

I think you'll find that lefties make up significantly less the 10% of the BB population overall, mainly due to the inherently right-handed design of the basketball and rim.

It doesn't make a huge difference, but I do think it gives you a bit of an advantage. Even if they know you're a lefty, the instincts of a defender are to play them as if they are a righty.

Not a UConn guy obviously, but my favorite lefty player right now is James Harden. That guy flat out knows how to ball.

Just remember -- SINISTER actually means left handed.

Then we have the ambisinister , who are equally clumsy with both hands. They tend to be post players.

If you need to bring in a reliever in the 7th against a hot left handed long ball threat, having a lefty in the pen is a huge advantage!

The title of this thread brings me to one of my favorite and most quotable movies.

"I'm not left handed either"

Probably my favorite movie. American Psycho is up there too though. Funny how different they are

As a terrible point I would always bring the ball up right handed, and then get off at least one easy move to the left. On the other hand 5 of the last 10 Masters winners were lefties. We are God's chosen people once we got the equipment...
