Lynx beat NY Liberty (sans Cappie) 88-57. Maya scored 28, including 6-10 on 3-pointers. Don't know if Bill was critical of his own team's poor play or his poor coaching, but he had a lot to say about Cheryl Reeve's decision to play Maya 36 minutes:

"I was a little disappointed when they left Maya Moore in the game to try and get player of the week again when the game was out of control," said Laimbeer, who spent 14 seasons in the NBA and earned a pair of championship rings. "She should get hurt for that."

Should get hurt? If any team has the players up to that task, it's the Liberty. The teams meet again on August 27.

Dear Bill: Coach your own team.

Really? When has Bill Laimbeer not ever been angry? This is a guy who was known throughout his NBA career as a cheap shot artist & dirty player. He's just bitter his team lost. He'll ALWAYS bitter. That is Bill Laimbeer...

It's one thing to be angry at the coach. Wishing injury on another player is never OK. It wasn't Maya's decision to stay out there. Players want to play. ALSO, this is the freaking PROFESSIONAL league, Bill. Not grade school. If a coach wants to blast a team by 30, well, guess what? They are all pros, and are getting paid to be there. Suck it up.

Bill "Lame-beer" Laimbeer..... 1,068 NBA games, 1,594 turnovers, 3,633 fouls, over 120 technical fouls....and he went to Notre Dame.;)

P.S. ok, he did score 10,000 points and get 10,000 rebounds...but he is still a putz....

It's a good thing Ol' Bill wasn't coaching any of The University of Oklahoma's opponents when Paris was there. He would have popped a vein over that situation.

I think he claimed that the lynx were trying to get her the player of the week award again.

Btw: completely ridiculous to wish injury on the player when it was the coach's decision.

If he was misquoted and meant to say, Maya could get hurt, then I find no issue with the remark. If he's suggesting that someone should go after her or any athlete, then he deserves to be canned, forget fined or disciplined. There's no room in athletics for someone who would willingly injure another player.

The WNBA needs to fine him. Substantially.
Totally agree with that. It's one thing to call out an opposing coach, and possibly rightfully so insofar as Reeve leaving Moore in so late into the game, but she also kept one of the other starters in till the same time (Augustus or Whalen - I forget which) till 30 seconds before Maya came out...

Kind of nice to have a coach who will keep things interesting, even when his team has not been. Welcome back, Bill.

Coaches in the NFL would be disciplined now for a quote like that. He is pathetic.

If he's got a problem, it should be with the coach, not her.

I could be way off here...but isn't the Lynx coach a former assistant/disciple of his?

She was one of Laimbeer's assistants when he was head coach of the Shock but I've seen no evidence to suggest she was a disciple.

Bill Laimbeer..........10,000 points. Wow. If the flopping rule were in effect back then, he wouldn't have had any.

Coach Laimbeer turned out to be a much better pro than I would have ever imagined when he came out of Notre Dame. He has also been a very good/successful WNBA coach. Does he not deserve the benefit of some doubt in this case? Certainly his choice of words regarding what should happen to Maya is questionable, but certainly not the question itself. What was Maya doing out on the floor in a blowout? Similar moves by other coaches have been questioned here on more than one occasion. And maybe his choice of words was directed more toward Coach Reeve than at Maya; Reminding the coach of the dangers of leaving a star out on the floor in a blowout; In any sport. Imagine the discussion we would be having here if Ms Moore had gotten injured late in a blowout.

What are the dangers of leaving a star player on the court in a blowout? Can you provide evidence that such a player faces a greater risk of injury during the latter stages of a blowout versus other parts of the game?

To suggest that Laimbeer's comments are secondary to why Maya was in the game during a blowout is misguided at best. Reeves clearly had her reasons for playing Maya until there were 3:42 left in the game, and for playing Whalen until there were 4:26 left in the game, and for playing Augustus until there were 4:39 left in the game. If Laimbeer's beef is with Reeves than he should have discussed it with her rather than suggesting that a star player who plays the game the right way should be injured for her coach's decision. His comments were spiteful and unprofessional and he deserves to be reprimanded by the league.

Getting mad about Maya staying in the game to pad stats is kind of funny. Frequently fans get excited about Maya getting a chance to pad her stats in a blowout only to be disappointed as Maya passes up shot after shot in an effort to get the bench players shots.
