Then he should have said that. Honestly, Burlington or the Waterbury Vermont area could be a fit then. Plenty of hiking and biking. Waterbury has some great pubs all walking distance from an inexpensive hotel. Perfect location for daytime hiking/biking and evening beer drinking.

Seriously.

May I suggest Naugatuck, CT? We have a river (white water rafting?), the Naugatuck Motor Lodge is affordable and has rooms with a hot tub and mirrors, and we even have two McDonald's, so you're never far from high-class dining at reasonable prices.
