OT: UM suspending all athletics for two weeks after outbreak of COVID variant

The state's patient zero had a negative coronavirus test two days before she traveled Jan. 3 from the U.K. to the U.S., said Susan Ringler Cerniglia, a spokeswoman for the Washtenaw County Health Department.

The woman also tested negative for the virus on Jan. 4 and Jan. 6. She got a positive coronavirus test result on Jan. 8 and began isolation on that date.

Most of the additional seven people who've contracted the virus since having close contact with the woman live in connected households, Ringler Cerniglia said, and are also in quarantine.

The B.1.1.7 variant is not more deadly and is not likely to make people more severely sick than other variants of coronavirus. But it is 1.5 times more transmissible, meaning it spreads about 50% faster than other strains of the virus circulating in Michigan.

If you are arriving from the UK, everyone on that flight should quarantine for 2 weeks. In reality, we should not be accepting flights from the UK under these circumstance.

1.) The B117 variant has been in the US for weeks. We just hadn't been looking hard for it. So, changing travel restrictions from other countries with B117 isn't going to do too much for the overall spread of this variant in the US.

2.) There's more than just "statistical modeling data" to support that B117 is more infectious than other variants. Pretty well-done epidemiologic studies.

3.) The vast majority of reporters that cover healthcare items are woefully undereducated in basic science, basic statistics, basic terminologies. Sometimes, their reports are unintentionally sensationalized due to misunderstanding, sometimes, the sensationalization is intentional.

4.) The UM response could be argued either way as exceptionally cautious precautions, or a minimally-scientific PR-driven move.

The virus has proven to be a tough customer. We are vaccinating over a million people a day. And the national positivity rate has dropped to the lowest rate since November.

Still there is pleny of time for more suprises. Can't blame Michigan for being cautious.
