Who remembers this opening to the 2012 Olympics?

She reportedly jumped at the chance to do it when it was proposed to her. Until the Paddington Bear video I never thought anything could top HM & James Bond.

She came to New Haven once, maybe in the 70s? I saw her in a motorcade with crowds of people cheering- on Chapel Street I think

1976 for the Bicentennial.

I've only been to the UK once, but the monarchy is big business there. I have a plate commemorating the Queen's visit to NYC in 1957; It was my grandmother's. She had a fondness because her father was born in England in the 1860s.
Yes, big business. I saw that up front and personal for two royal weddings, yes including the "Big One." Elisabeth's attitude was that as a constitutional monarchy the way to "rule" was to do nothing while continuing to celebrate monarch's trappings and ceremonies. That suited her as a very private person. It was the source of her biggest disgrace; her failure to respond to the Welch Aberfan Mine disaster, which claimed a huge number of school children.
