Leading up to the game, I read about what a treat the UMass band would be. I stayed in my seat and watched - yawn. They were fine and had many members, but the UConn band blew them off the field. Not as bad as their football team was blown off the field, but almost. This isn't the first time the UConn band blew away an overrated opponent. The same thing happened in Ann Arbor. While admittedly, the UM band had a rip-roaring entrance with a top-notch drum major, the actual routine itself wasn't nearly as good as the one from The Pride of Connecticut.

speaking of the Umass band... anyone know how one of their band members was injured? I saw one being escorted down the visitor tunnel and he was holding his eye/side of his face. Hope he wasn't hit with a bottle or something from a Uconn fan

I think that came from an overanimated xylophone player. We all know that a bottle couldn't cause any harm due to the confiscation of all bottle caps.

That might be a little harsh Waq. I absolutely love our band but it would be a mistake, I think, not to recognize the talent, enthusiasm, and creative musicianship of the UMass band. Having lost their great Director, George Parks last year when he dropped dead on their way to Michigan Stadium, they have held together and made themselves and their school proud. While the score was 37-0 between our football teams, the final score between the bands was a lot closer than that.

If it was just after halftime the UMass kickers/punters were launching some practice kicks and I saw one of the band get nailed as they were coming up into the stands. They also hit one of their fellow players who was kneeling and praying (can this please stop, god doesn't give a rats ass about sporting events) in the end zone before the start of the second half.

I think we were better but I though they held their own. No need to kick a school while they are down.

I said they were fine and they were the ones woofin'. But I admit I hate UMass as much as others hate Duke.

Not for nothing but why do people always go to the darkside?
Well I should have mentioned i was also near the drunk guy chanting "left, left, left, left" (mocking the basketball left, right chant) when one of the Umass players was hobbling back to the locker room on one leg. I've seen a lot of dumb stuff at the Rent and given our history w/ opposing fans (and mascots) just assumed the worst. Glad it was just an accidental kick. I know 98% of our fans aren't D-bags... but those 2% are usually pretty dumb.

most of our fans are ok, but there's a select minority that are absolutely cringe-worthy.

Why? I can't bring myself to hate someone that doesn't matter.

I agree. I was told they only had 4 days of practice - not enough time to put together much of a show I guess.

I totally agree. My wife and I were impressed by the Umass band on a number of occasions throughout the evening. They were certainly the best performance for a visiting team at the Rent.

That was UMass' first D1 game and being only 45 minutes away, I thought their showing was awful. Besides family and the band, I thought their section of fans would at least spill up into the second tier a little bit.

I don't even want to know what the place would have looked like if it were Fordham or Murray State. There were some UMass fans scattered throughout. One poor guy who was still getting frustrated in the second half in front of me. UMass didn't even try to score in the fourth quarter - one of their last possession they didn't even get on the field until the play clock was in single digits.

I thought Umass band was pretty good. Best visiting band in my opinion by far was West Virginia a few years ago.

Some very embarrassing fan behavior. It's unfortunate.
