This announcement is doubly significant: Not only is she ruled immediately eligible after transferring, but apparently her junior year of eligibility was restored through an additional exemption from the medical hardship waiver rules. She played in 6 games in what would have been her junior year in 2019-20, including against Maryland on Jan. 20, which was certainly past the midpoint of the season.

Dara Mabrey's appeal was accepted and she can play in 2020-21. She'll also have 21-22.

From this Irish fan's perspective, this was fortuitous timing because this is the year ND needed a point/lead guard, with Marta Sniezek gone and Olivia Miles not coming until 2021. Dara can man this with assistance from combo guard Kaitlyn Gilbert and frosh Alasia Hayes, but Iv'e got to think this is what Niele Ivey was hoping for.

On that note, I'll exit stage right before Jess Shepard's name is invoked...

I've read that the NCAA has all but approved a one-time waiver for all players. That may be prompting the slew of waivers granted this season.

I wouldn't want Irish fans to have to suffer through another unranked season. Not out of sympathy but just to keep their whining down to the normal 90 decibel level.

Wow, that's covering all the ingredients in the stew, DefenseBB! I'll try to take them component-wise and overall.
- Dara. She was used primarily as a shooter last year at Va. Tech but handled the offense as a combo guard her frosh year. She's on record as saying she'll do anything Niele wants. The plan -- pre-eligibility -- was for combo guard Kaitlyn Gilbert to be the lead guard, with help from frosh Alasia Hayes. I'll take a bet that Dara will now be in that pool, due to her work frosh year and the senior year in HS when she led her Manasquan team to the NJ overall state title as a point guard.

If anything, it gives the Irish some options there and will increase the scoring potential and outside shooting from that position (Marta Sniezek could take a charge but jump shooting was not a consistent option.)

- Can They Move The Ball? I sure hope so. Having Ivey back should help address the flow in the offense, whether it's the modified Princeton offense and/or some variations of high pick and roll that Niele learned from her year in the NBA.

- Well, who is going to facilitate that? Jury is out on Mabrey/Gllbert/Hayes until we see the results, right?
(Many Benchers think this truly won't be addressed until PG Olivia Hayes rolls onto the court in 2021.)

But, if you've paid attention to the Irish ball-control offense, it works best when you have a high-post player who can facilitate ball movement, both down to the paint and around the horn. Think Natalie Achonwa or Kat Westbeld. For that reason, I'm paying attention to frosh Maddy Westbeld, who looks to be a duplicate of older sister. Maybe not immediately, but as the season progresses.

- Outside shooting. Dara, Desiree Walker and Sam Brunelle will be counted on for long distance shooting. Brunelle's percentage went up once Mik Vaughn returned to the line-up and Sam didn't have to play center on defense and wing on offense. Ivey said a priority was getting the ball to Brunellee to maximize her strengths. Dara is a Mabrey ('nuff said ) Frosh-wise: forward Westbeld can shoot deep, but me thinks mid-range is her forte. And frosh guard/wing Alli Campbell is another shooter with range.

- Defense: ??? Mik Vaughn cleaned up knee in the off-season and that's needed. Her mobility in the center is critical. Guardwise, ballhawk Abby Prohaska returns from her lung issues and Anaya Peoples is also back. Both are excellent defenders. Alasia Hayes is supposed to be good on the ball and Dara is the best of the Mabreys at defense. Still, who knows?

- As for Niele, Coquese Washington, Michaela Mabrey and Carol Owens, the coaching staff: they all know each other, but that was working for Muffet. We'll have to see how the step up goes.

To paraphrase the late, great Daviid Niven: in the preseasons, the moon's a balloon. Stay tuned.

If Shemera hasn't landed yet, it's not for lack of offers. Must be taking her time to decide -- she was a late announcer, in mid-August -- or maybe she's considering opting out this year.

Raoul seems puzzled, but if I understand the situation correctly, even a grad transfer needs to get cleared by their former school for immediate eligibility in an intra-Big 12 transfer. Similar to how Tech last year initially blocked DeGrate's bid for immediate eligibility at Baylor, before finally relenting.

If OSU is in fact trying to block immediate eligibility, I can totally understand their position. They lost 2 transfers to another Big 12 school. The Big 12 has rules in place for a reason, and the players decided to transfer knowing about those rules.

Will be interesting to see what happens in the future regarding intra-conference transfers within the Big 12 after the 2020-21 season with the new NCAA rule allowing for a one-time transfer with immediate eligibility.
