For my birthday gift, my wife got us a room at the Hi-Ho and we'll head over to New Haven to pick up pizza from both Sally's and Modern. First night out of the house since January. It'll be my first time at Modern and her first time at both.

One pie from each.

What's the order?

Modern: Red pie with mozz, artichoke hearts and eggplant. Well done. Or red pie with mozz, meatballs and tomato.

Sally’s: Red pie with mozz and bacon. Or red pie with mozz, pepperoni (cupped) and mushroom. Or Garden Pie, no onions.

Hi Ho in Fairfield? It's a good half hour each way to Wooster Square. Yes, you'd have great pizza, but that's really how you want to spend your first night out since January? Eat outside below the hotel at Barcelona. It's safe. Go into Fairfield and eat outside at Centro or the Sinclair, where the tables are also spaced out. I love me a New Haven pie, but to spend your one night out driving and bringing pizza back to your hotel room? You can do better.

If you were hitting Pepi's, White Clam would have to be on the list. But i seem to remember Modern's Clam Casino being pretty darn good.

Glad to hear Barcelona and Centro are still there. We lived right up the hill from the Hi-Ho in Easton.

Then you don't live far from us, because as the crow flies we're maybe a mile and a half from the Hi Ho. But I'm going to assume Hey Adrien has better things to do than being invited to my house for a socially distanced drink.

We were a little farther than that - up toward Silverman's Farm. That was 10+ years ago. Now, according to the Google we're 2,110 miles from the Hi-Ho :)

If you are looking for their signature pies go with the first response you got.

You really cannot go wrong at either, but I think Modern does better with more toppings than Sally's.

Sally's in my opinion is the best when they are on, but I also like more simple pizzas with at most two toppings.

Either way, eat it in the parking lot or throw it on the grill for a few minutes when you get it home. Happy Birthday and I don't remember the room# but I hope you don't get the one I stayed in at the Hi-Ho after Senior prom.

Absolutely the best way to eat takeout pizza. It's often better than it would have been in the restaurant. If not the grill, then get a big non-stick pan hot, put a couple of slices in it and throw it in a 400 (or so, or whatever your non-stick is rated to) degree oven. (both of these assume you like crispy crust)

I've still never had eggplant prepared in a way that made me want to to eat it. But I'd give that a try.
