it’s very impressive that Sool has this team top 10 nationally and atop of the PCL. It’s literally just him and 3 low/mid major kids.

AW is maybe the best coached team I've seen in high school recently. Every kid knows his role and they have great chemistry. Dematha is pretty darn good as well--he develops talent better than anyone, but I don't think his in-game coaching is anything to write home about. Have not been terribly impressed by the TPS and RC coaches--they strike me as relying on talent rather than creating a college-like team. They're good... better than average. But not exceptional like AW or DC.

Is AW actually a top ten team? Is it a bad year for high school ball?

Sool vs Neumann-Goretti

16 PTS
6 REB (1 offensive)
8 AST (7 potential / 1 foul)

1 TO
1 STL
2 BLK

2/6 2FG
3/7 3FG
3/6 FT

1 charge drawn

  • Dematha and Archbishop Wood both switch A LOT 1-4. Will be good experience for our switch-heavy D.
  • Underrated skill: he never passes and stands. Whenever he swings the ball he relocates with a soft/rub screen.
  • Coach uses him as a screener a lot in OOB and SOBs.
  • Despite my concerns with his defense, he does deserve a nod that he 1) communicates well on switches 2) is generally in the right place. I would assume that bodes well going forward for improving
  • Take some kind of boneheaded shots early in possessions. Not in transition any more, and haven’t set anything up in the half court. Odd.
  • Talks to his coach constantly during foul shots, short breaks, between inbounds etc. Good thing to see in a PG.
  • Much less right-hand dominant than a year ago. Still not totally ambidextrous, but a notable area of improvement.
  • Doing a better job turning, sprinting, sliding his feet on D instead of reaching. His step slow athletically is more noticeable when he puts in that effort.
  • Didn’t see the entire game + OT. Does a good job with in-game rest most of the time. Shabazz had this mastered.
  • I see one more ref who feels the need to dramatically run down the court for charge calls, I’m quitting basketball fandom forever. God that is annoying.
  • Not particularly effective off ball. Lot of standing

Some nice hustle going after the loose ball here (after kind of a lazy rebound attempt)

Nice defensive possession by his team.

Doesn’t scrap for a loose ball but does get the nice block…

Tricky dribbles. Gets a bailout foul call for a carry it looks like to me

Nice drive and dump off

Pump fake, step back 3. Not sure how % of a shot that is, but it looks smooth

Ugly first 2 point FG of the game

Real nice pass.

Tricky dribble and the assist

TF kind of shot was this. No shot clock down 2, 30 seconds left? Seems like a boneheaded mistake from a kid who doesn’t make many.

Nice wind up 3

Overall: Efficiency at the rim, FT line, and 3 point line are still my primary concerns. Also, how does he fit in with Jackson who also needs the ball in his hands constantly to be at his best?
Defense is not good now, but I’ll chalk that up to a lot of minutes--Hurley will get the most out of him and he should be able to play harder starting with fewer minutes. Game management, passing, IQ are likely the best on our team next year.

FWIW I haven't been able to see games, and the stats are incomplete, but Samson Johnson is averaging about

13.5 PTS
8.0 REB
2.0 AST
3.7 BLK

Only two 3 point makes on the season, which is disappointing, but not surprising.

Considering he's bulked up a bit and is a legit 6'11 with a 7'6 wingspan, I wonder if we'd want to try to use him behind Sanogo at the 5 at least early in the season.

Hawkins vs Our Savior

10 PTS
7 REB (2 Offensive)
1 AST (2 Potential/ 0 Foul)

3 TO
0 STL
3 BLK

4/9 2FG
0/3 3FG
2/2 FT

Definitely not his best shooting night. I think he may have only made one jumper out of 6. Shot well at the rim per usual though. Had a few nice hustle plays.

Diggins tonight... vs Judge

5 PTS
7 REB (2 offensive)
4 AST (5 potential / foul)

1 TO
0 STL
1 BLK

1/1 2FG
1/5 3FG
0/0 FT

About 22 minutes.
  • Does the job seeing the hockey assist.. Especially for corner shooters.
  • I could see him as a Kevin Ollie type eventually… doesn’t strike me that he’ll ever be a great scorer. The other comp I’ve seen is AJ Price which would make a lot of sense if he can shoot it pretty consistently. Not dynamic enough with the ball to make me think of Bazz or Marcus Williams.
  • AW runs some really good sets vs the 2-3. I stole one of them they run at 1:01:30
  • Not being a threat to drive is going to hurt him at our level. He rarely even thinks about it. Teams are just going to defend the pass recognizing he isn’t gonna blow by anyone.
  • Sat for 3 minutes at the end of the 3rd/beginning 4th and his team blew a 20 point wlead that got cut to 10. Good sign for us even if the raw #s didn’t look great tonight.
  • Wouldn’t expect much defensively

Diggins through 5 games:

15.4 PTS
7.0 REB
5.5 AST

1.8 TO
2.8 STL
1.0 BLK

44% FG (9.8 attempts)
48% 2FG (5.3 attempts)
38% 3FG (4.5 attempts)

Overall... Brilliant passer and floor general. Leading a team that shouldn't be as good as they are. Concerning defender. Despite the decent 3pt%, I am worried he will not be a very good shooter up here... streaky vs the better teams. Has a knack for getting boards despite minus athleticism. Has a knack for getting deflections and steals, and generally getting his hand on the ball. Good game sense in that way.
