The UConn women return to the XL Center for the first time since November to host Xavier (6-8, 1-4) today at 12 noon. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network. Beginning with today's game, all attendees to UConn athletic contests will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. For more information on the policy, click HERE. UConn women's basketball will host its first-ever Pride Game on Saturday to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. The Huskies will wear Pride shooting shirts, which are available for purchase HERE.
The Huskies are coming off their most complete game of the season, a 92-47 win over Butler Wednesday. Senior Christyn Williams posted 19 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists while senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa had 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. UConn made 19 steals in the game and scored 43 points off turnovers. If Auriemma gets his way, the Butler game could be the beginning of something great in more ways than that. Yes, Butler was an inferior opponent, but the Huskies brought an energy and willpower, especially on defense, that allowed them to dictate the game from start to finish, a tenacity they haven’t had much this season.
Xavier is coming off a 54-49 loss to Providence on Jan. 11 at Cintas Center. Mackayla Scarlett scored a game and career-high 17 points on 6-for-17 shooting. She scored seven of her points in the final quarter. The Musketeers were held to a season-low .242 field-goal percentage (15-for-62). Xavier hit 75 percent (15-for-20) of its free-throw attempts. All told, six players are averaging over eight points per game. Five different players have dished out 20 or more assists this season.
Xavier is averaging 67.4 points per game on 41.5% shooting. Its top scorer this season, Nia Clark (14.1 points per game), hasn’t taken the court since Dec. 19, missing the last three games. Her status for Saturday is unknown. Calhoun and Satterfield are the Musketeers’ other top scorers at 10.7 and 10.1 points per game. The Musketeers allow more points on average than they score, with opponents putting up 71.1 points per game on 40.5% shooting. Satterfield and Townsend collect 13.2 rebounds per game combined, but UConn should have the advantage on the glass, especially offensively.
