The Lancers edged Grand Canyon in OT at home to remain undefeated at 19-0. GCU hit 9 threes and Cal Baptist had 22 turnovers to keep this closer than expected.

GCU still leads the race in the WAC as the Lancers transitioning into the conference.

GCU gets another shot at the Lancers tonight. The WAC plays back-to-back games for long distance rivals.

Yesterday was an exciting game. Freshman center Katie Scott for Grand Canyon had a huge game, the Lopes had 19 offensive rebounds and as indicated turned the Lancers over 22 times. In my view the game came down to the amazing three-point shooting of Cal Baptist which late in the game and overtime opened up drives to the rim and Grand Canyon's abysmal free throw shooting 10 out of 20.

Game today should be outstanding. Second place in WAC is still up in the air. The Lopes were helped when New Mexico State upset Utah Valley yesterday. Assuming a split by Utah Valley and another loss by the Lopes there would be a tie between those two teams for second place.

BTW, Grand Canyon is the only for-profit school in NCAA Division 1.
The Grand Canyon story over the last 20 years has been an interesting one. The classification as for profit puts them at a significant disadvantage to those institutions of "higher education" who received the non-taxable, subsidized non-for-profit status.

I wonder on the observation about profit or non-profit status whether an argument can be made that the administration of Grand Canyon is merely being more honest and that the university is behaving as a positive corporate citizen contributing back to the state and community in which they reside.

Harvard and other elite schools have non-for-profit status. One would be hard-pressed to argue that the actions of the trustees, shareholders and other stakeholders are not disimilar to a profit oriented business. Moreover there are significant taxpayer subsidies to non for profit status organizations that are in effect net transfers from the for-profit sector and from consumers and taxpayers. I'm really not convinced that there are net positive benefits from a policy that grants these large elite schools who have massive endowments subsidies in the form of tax advantages as well as other advantages that seem to negate transparency.

While not part of the tax code or governmental licensing as non-profit one would hope that non-profit status is granted to entities that are making an effort to foster positive spillovers from either public goods or governmental failure.

The Harvard Crimson had a really interesting editorial that explore this perception of abuse..

If one looks to Arizona for potential areas of concern regarding the tax code one could profitably review the reporting on President Michael Crow and Arizona State University's use of tax exemption from local property taxes as well as income taxes to engage in development activities that are extraordinarily profitable.

As an Arizona resident I'm far less impacted by the subsidies and wealth transfers to Harvard than I am by those of Arizona State University my alma mater. Crow is a clever and shrewd gamesman and by removing large swaths of development from the tax rolls further pressures a budget in Arizona that is strained to meet the needs of education as well as a failed criminal justice system.

As a tax paying entity Grand Canyon University contributes back to the public coffers.

Four more schools will join the WAC soon (Abilene Christian University, Lamar University, Sam Houston State University, and Stephen F. Austin State University) as football will be reintroduced.

Interesting. It's a very far flung conference geographically, but that's gonna make it kind of Texas-centric.

After the sizzling 3 point performance yesterday the Lopes and Lancers are ice cold in the first quarter at 0 for 9 from beyond the Arc as Grand Canyon profits from solid D to take a 16-11 lead.

Lancers hit 4 threes in the second quarter to take a 2 point lead at the half.

Meanwhile Utah Valley leading New Mexico State 25-20 as they seek to secure 2nd place in the WAC and the automatic bid.

CBU won more easily today with a strong second half. For the game, the Lancers had 25 assists on 34 made baskets. The UConn of the West???

It's gonna be such a shame if they go undefeated this year and can't participate in the Tourney. Even if they do pick up an L it's a shame they aren't eligible.

Is Cal Baptist the last remaining undefeated team in division 1? I mean are there any undefeated teams in division 1 as the Lancers transition in?

Bucknell is 8-0 and havent played in a month. They have 2 games scheduled next weekend, the last of the regular season in the Patriot League. Bucknell's 8-0 record, is against 3 teams only, all in league.

Nice article

"California Baptist is the only team outside of a major conference in the last five years to start 20–0, joining UConn, Louisville, Mississippi State and NC State in that exclusive club. It’s won conference games by an average margin of 20.1 points, and has clinched the WAC regular-season title. "

From the article, talking about the WNIT--“That's a really good goal for us because I think that's a tournament we think we can get into and actually win a couple games,” Olson says. “The NCAA obviously would be amazing, right? But the reality is, it's kind of fun for about the first five minutes against UConn, right?

WAC POY Ane Olaeta of Cal Baptist. My favorite player in WCBB, this year. Not sure if you call this move an ankle breaker or a butt slammer move. 2nd hi lite was a half court buzzer beater, that made ESPN Top 10 plays of the day.
