130 schools play D1 football. 350 schools play D1 basketball. So currently 35+% of the total basketball schools (the major football schools) hold 85+% of the top basketball positions (in 2020 it was over 90%). At the end of last year D1 football schools held 43 of the top 50 basketball spots.

The football schools also control a vast majority of the college sports revenue. They have the power. This is why many of us believe that UConn should remain in the power group and do everything it can to play at the top tier of that group. The truth is that about 60 schools control college athletics. And, right now, UConn and the Big East are on the outside looking in. I know there are many UConn basketball fans that don't care a whit about college football. But it works both ways and the people who control college athletics don't care a whit about UConn. It's a dangerous position to be in. This years top 25 is listed below with an * signifying D1 football status.

Most people here are happy we are no longer in the AAC after the dumpster fire that has become. Just because someone says “thank goodness we’re in the Big East” does not mean they wouldn’t also jump at the chance to be in the ACC or B1G. I think everyone understands the importance of getting into a Power conference. We need to try to do that. But until that invite comes, we are in the best position possible.

Basketball gets to prove itself in a basketball power conference.

Football gets to prove itself by playing several power conference teams every season.

Basketball is doing its job. They’re top 25. Football needs to get its rear in gear if we even want to sniff a power conference. If things stay as they are there is absolutely no shot of that happening.

The only reason UConn even has a D-1 FB team is because basketball was so successful we decided to go for it. It was sold as a necessity to keep our BB successful. That turned out to be complete nonsense, FB became a millstone to BB. Luckily we were able to escape the AAC before it took us under completely.

This is where your argument breaks down. It is not an option to remain in something they were no longer in. The administration had every indication that it was not likely to happen, despite their efforts. They took the next best path.
