How did Rutgers qualify for a bowl game with a 5-7 record?

Wake is going to hang 60 on them. The highest APR 5-7 team is a fine system when it’s the Big Boy Mowers Bowl but makes no sense for a premier bowl game. Rutgers gets to brag about “making” the 2021 Gator Bowl forever now. How about promoting someone from a lesser bowl and let Rutgers backfill there?

That's to messy for the team and fans of that team. Nice gesture though

If there aren’t available 6 win teams 5 win teams are eligible in APR order.

Wake won 38-10. Rutty wasn't awful today - were competitive for awhile but this Wake team is very good. A 5-7 Rutgers team basically got a free pass to their biggest bowl game ever thanks to another team backing out from COVID and other reasons.

And to think our Fiesta Bowl bid got mocked.

I was asking the same thing, especially vs a ranked team. But ya, replacement.

If Rutgers wants to brag about being a replacement team as one of the athletics department's highest achievements ever, says more about them than anything else, really. Then again, this is coming from the same UNI that wanted second-hand kudos for UConn achievements (something related to coaches involved with 1 billion NBA earnings). So with Rutgers, nothing is off the table, it seems.

Game was actually more competitive than the score suggests. Rutgers defensive line was in Hartman’s face all afternoon. Rutgers couldn’t move the ball too well in the second half and it’s defense was worn out by the end of the game.
Sound familiar?

Wake's defense was eating up Rutgers passing game...sacks, batted down pass, hands in face...those big Wake D linemen had the game handled...

Wake Passing 304 yards....Rutgers...165

Wake Interceptions...2....Rutgers...0

28 first downs to 17

This game was not in any way close.

Did you watch it? It was close until the third quarter.

First half was competitive...Rutgers used like 8 quarterbacks. But Wake dominated in the second half.

Give credit to Rutgers...season was over for them and they get called back in and have to get re-focused for a game.

Why would anybody brag about making The Gator Bowl?

In fairness that year the Big East didn’t deserve a BCS bid.

If it is UConn next year you don't think there would be some sense of bragging?
We've been to a bigger Bowl than the Gator. The Gator was Rutgers biggest. So they would be less to brag about.

They won't be able to hide the context of a 5-8 record in a New Years Eve bowl.
