SSC Tuatara. Richmond, WA based supercar maker.

Just ran a two way average of 316 mph on a regular run of the mill highway (closed for safety) on Michelin tires you can buy at your local tire store. That'd be like driving from Storrs to Baltimore in one hour.

Over two one-way runs, the Tuatara averaged 316.11 mph. The quickest run, at 331.15 mph, broke the previous one-way record of 284.6 mph, set by Koenigsegg on the same stretch of road in 2017, by 46.6 mph. Another notable speed record by a production car happened in September 2019, when a Bugatti Chiron reached 304.773 mph on the Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.

You'd need another few mill to build a track you could drive it on. I'm gonna guess it doesn't handle potholes well.

That's what I found incredulous about this speed run. It was done on an open road vice a track or something like flats in Bonneville. I remember reading a few years ago when one of the car magazines was doing a comparison of 200 mph cars. One of the test drivers mentioned how scary even a paved track is when you have a legit 200 mph car. He was saying it's not just a psych out from the number but most production cars start behaving very erratically above 180 mph and how driving a car at 200 can be terrifying.
Going 120 mph faster than that really speaks to the engineering, stability and downforce of this car. And yes, I would think a single stray armadillo crossing the road could destroy a car like this.

That isn’t near Richmond... I was afraid they were on East coast roads.

Good catch. Company is based in Richland, Washington. Speed test was done on a road in Nevada.

Hugely impressive stuff from SSC. They really didn’t get the recognition they deserved with the last gen Ultimate Aero. The Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut certainly has its work cut out.

This is an interesting technical achievement. But really useless to actual drivers. I am glad we left the horrific 80's and 90's cars behind.

In 1984 the new C4 Corvette came out and did a quarter mile in 15.5. 0-60 was 7.9 seconds. This was almost a second faster than the 1983.

The 1977 Trans Am from Smokey & The Bandit? Car and Driver got a 0 to 60 time of 9.3 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 16.9. A Toyota Sienna is faster than that.

This is what a current generation Honda Accord does. A Camry performs similarly.
Touring 2.0T 4dr Sedan
252 Hp, 273 Lb-Ft., 3428 Weight, 22 City / 32 Hwy mpg
5.9 sec, 14.4 @ 98

My nearly 5000 pound SUV manages 5.8 0-60 and 14.5 Q mile.

The reality is that most cars are now fairly quick.

Good thing he wasn't going the other way. The speed limit is 70 MPH.

300mph is cool and all but I need a flying car to get past I95 rush hour traffic. Can they work on a flying car?

Unless, you have one of these in the passenger seat just in case you get pulled over.
